July 20, 2019 - Slow ox one hour, followed by a quick decant. Spicy, tart and exceptionally balanced, yet somewhat shut down. Loads of dark fruit, yet not quite the complexity I had anticipated. Decided to let the wine decant another 90 minutes and I was rewarded with a glimpse of the highly regarded VCC prowess. At the two hour mark I started to get a hint of all sorts of secondary flavors, from mellow cherry, to bits of spice and a touch of sweet apricot, perfectly timed to balance out the dark fruits. My sense is that at the 10 year mark the VCC is showing just a glimmer of its potential. Almost perfectly balanced with fine tannins and exquisite acidity, my guess is that I opened this bottle at least 5 years too early. 96 for now, with the potential of 2-3 points higher as Father Time works his patience and magic.
