July 30, 2019 - Side by side 2012 Alpine and 2012 Bearwallow (from 375). These were the most successful vintages I have had to date. Both bottles popped and poured, and tasted over several hours as they opened up. Both showed purity and restraint, both have a bright future but are ready to go with a few hours of air. The Alpine was cooler and more brooding, somewhat snobbish but definitely classy. The Bearwallow more overtly fruity and brash, with crisp cherry fruit and some spice. Both wines showed excellent focus. Very good finish for the Alpine, persisting and delicate, excellent long mouthwatering finish on the Bearwallow with sweet kirsch notes. I've had may Rhys pinots and to me they are always pleasurable but seldom impressive, however these two really sang tonight.
