Community Tasting Note

  • WineBurrowingWombat Likes this wine: 99 points

September 27, 2019 - Nose: White and purple florality, lots of dark red/blue/purple fruits, spice box, great deep earth and clean rocks (imagine from a shallow river bed) [this initial nose was at about 57°]. As it comes to room temperature, dark maceration of fruits appear more (showing more on the red side). Either some cranberry skins or some soft tobacco leaves. Slight underbrush as well (thinking more of stems and branches). This one is hard to call but a well blended pencil shaving note as well (as in more of the wood, not so much the lead).

Palate: Rich, deep and dark earth, a pleasantly savory oak, similar soft spice box from the nose that gradually grows into a firm spice and dark fruits that's subtly laced throughout. [this initial taste was at about 57°]. At room temperature, the dark fruits are no longer softly laced but rather a strong showing of it and more in balance with everything noted previously. Finishes with a pleasant bitterness like tea. On the first tasting when it was cold, those notes you can differentiate individually but as it comes to room temperature, it all becomes so well balanced that it's hard to distinguish (in a really good way).

Really dark red and with a blackish core. Dry with medium amounts of smooth tannins. Full bodied (first time ever) with medium amounts of well integrated and well hidden acidity. Good finish of about 14-16 seconds with additional seconds for the steeped tea/mineraly bitterness lingering on. The scores of other tasters are spot on. Like the 2014 "True" Outpost, I'm scared to give this 100 because I feel like, "What if there is possibly something better?" This is rich, bold, concentrated, intense and yet so well balanced. Not one thing has their elbows sticking out. Really enjoyable.. I want to say it has such amazing and enjoyable fruit but it's not just the fruit that's making it so good. It's the integration of everything else: the dark rich earth, the oak, the spice (which has calmed down into place), minerality and bitterness. Also, for a full bodied wine, it moves freely across the palate. Again, I want to give this 100 (I think it actually deserves it) but I just don't know what a 100 point wine is.. I know this is really good though (I'm also afraid I'm influenced by the previous tasters but I try really hard to be honest about a tasting regardless of what others may think). If you enjoy rich, earthy, dark fruited wine with a sprinkling of the other notes (like oak, spice and pencil shavings), this is it. I get it.. it's young blah blah blah but it's so good now.. my curiosity for how it tastes as it ages has gone out the window. I almost don't care how this ages because I'm thinking the good stuff that I'm experiencing now will be lost as time goes on. Apologies for the essay as well.
