October 4, 2019 - This is the less expensive Aglianico from Giornata, from the French Camp Vineyard. Comes across much like an Aglianico from the Alta Irpinia region of Campania: it has the utterly alluring dark amarena cherry aromas of Taurasi and a savory, smooth palate without the over-extracted (and sometimes rough) tannins that often characterize the big wine/riserva approach to Taurasi.

There are also a number of bigger brawnier Aglianicos made in coastal California with high alcohol, hefty tannins, umami/balsamic qualities, ageability, at the expense of an alluring fruit. They fail to capture the sensual essence of this grape. Glad to learn that Giornata has found the Aglianico sweet spot. Vintners are still finding their way with this variety, not that easy to cultivate with success.

    In a fine drinking window.
