October 4, 2019 - Tasted blind. Tasting this wine from this mythical winery was a first for me and a great experience… but I would wish we would have done that in 10+ years. Unfortunately, our very generous donor picked probably the one out of many Screaming Eagle vintages in his cellar which is currently the least open and ready for party. So we got only a glimpse of what this beauty has in store. The highlight for me: the strong terroir expression and the very luxurious structure. 94 to 95 points with upside once mature. I wouldn‘t open any bottles before 2028.

TN: Rather muted nose with some slate and dark fruit. A bit more open on the palate with very well-delineated but not overly intense aromas of wet slate, dark fruit, with time more and more red berries with extremely soft and pure cherries and strawberries, some herbs and just hints of coffee and cocoa. Very soft and luxurious tannin structure and a good freshness.

Decanting: Decanted for roughly 3h which was not enough (I guess this one would currently need at least 8h+).

10/7/19, 8:15 AM - Sorry to hear about the experience. However, really appreciate the TN. The 2013 vintage as AG stated, is aging at a glacial pace. Sounds like CT drink window needs to be updated on this one.

10/8/19, 12:23 AM - Don't feel too sorry, it wasn't a bad experience at all, it just hunts me that this wine would have been so much better in 10+ years and that the likelihood is quite high that I will not experience that (as I don't have any bottles). :) I've had roughly 25 Napa Valley 2013s in the past two years and 90% of them were rather muted and closed. Only some exceptions were able to shine, like the Harlan, but this needed two hour of heavy swirling in the glass (would probably equal 12+ hours of decanting) to open up. I wouldn't open any 2013s now, their just not ready and you deprive yourself from some really great bottles you can drink in the future.
