November 22, 2019 - 2013-2016 MacDonald Mini Vertical (Bottega, Yountville): Gave this about 6 hours of air, including a decant, which was just about right as it was singing right out of the gate. Of the vintages we tasted side by side (13-16), this is clearly the wine to open now, although another few years certainly will not hurt. Super perfumed on the nose, this wine was really a delight to the senses, with lovely violets, some black cherry, raspberries and hints of spice. Broad, deep, powerful, rich and expressive on the palate, there are waves of blue/red fruit, black licorice, dark chocolate, loamy earth and mineral driven notes highlighting excellent complexity. While this is a very serious wine, in comparison to its siblings, it showed the most finesse and approachability. The finish is fairly plush and long, but not quite on the same level as the others. Hard to imagine many being better for the vintage.
