November 26, 2019 - PnP 167. My first experience with Krug (don’t judge). I have not been a champagne fan until last June upon my visit to Champagne where I was able to taste different types/houses/etc. Since I am allergic to shellfish, the typical pairing never made sense for me. Further, I am not a fan of SB or highly pronounced acid which many of the Champagnes I have tasted previously were not my bag (including recent DP vintages, etc)... until Dom Rose and P2 hit it out of the park- since then I am on the Champagne train. Wow that was a lot of preamble worthlessness but wanted to set the stage.

My style preference is not extra Brut nor highly acidic styles. I prefer a richer creamer mouthfeel, underlying acid and mineral spine with enough fruit to be noticeable followed by the brioche aged signature flavor profile... so everyone said Krug is the Champagne for me. Wow more ramblings of the insane, sorry.

So I have been a kid at Christmas waiting for AZ to cool off and get my first Krug delivery. This was edition 167 cuvée half bottle. Hmm I think I over hyped this in my head or it needed more time or other. Quality juice no doubt about it. Loved the brioche, yeast, green apple, citrus, slight nutty characteristic with a wonderful finish. It improved over time which begs the question- decant(do people do this?) or open in advance? Back to the drawing board, not giving up until I figure this out. Hold next 375 for 6 months. Taste another edition as an aged stylistic house comparison.

11/27/19, 10:39 AM - For how long was it open? I have found that good champs needs at least a half hour to breath a bit in bottle before it starts to show the goods.

Have you tried Billecart Salmon? FWIW, that's my favorite champs producer, even above Krug. Everyone knows and loves their Rose, but recently I had their Brut Sous Bois, which is aged in oak barrels. It was amazing, as the vanilla elements that I love in a Napa cabernet were on full display.

I usually get my top clients some Veuve or Billecart Extra Brut for year end gifts, but this year they are getting the above. Its really tasty, check it out..

11/27/19, 10:53 AM - Thanks blarmston. Yes the Salmon Rose is my wife’s favorite which I also happen to enjoy. I will take a look at the Brut Sous Bois version as it sounds excellent. It did get better at 30 minute mark. Thank you!

11/28/19, 9:05 PM - Reading your description of preference I might suggest you trying Charles Heidsieck''s Brut Reserve
Widely available at around 50-60$ for a regular bottle. Has the same recipe as Krug with many old reserve wInes, lots of toastyness and an aged feel already at release. There is ofcourse a quality difference as well as the wines fermenting in stainless steel instead of barrel and malolactic being forced, but both of these make the wine more accessible in its youth compared to krug. It ages beautifully as well. Have have 10-20 year old bottle's of this that were singing.
