December 26, 2019 - Shared among family at our annual Xmas eve dinner. Once again this wine delivered, taking WOTN in the lineup- 2013 Kathryn Hall, 2016 Memento Mori Dr. Crane and 2006 Caymus. Similar notes as stated below. In all honesty, my palate was totally fatigued this evening as all the wine and sugary foods over the last couple weeks had taken its toll. By Christmas evening, all I wanted was a beer.

12/26/19, 9:59 AM - Great face2face with 2016 memento Mori Dr Crane (one of my favorites). I am highly surprised by the outcome as my experiences with 2016 MM Dr has been outstanding- so this is super encouraging as I have not tried the 2016 yet. Look forward to opening one soon.

Curious if the Dr you opened was an off bottle or starting to shutdown. Thanks for posting!

12/26/19, 10:34 AM - I don't think the MM DrC was shutdown, just highly wound-up. If I could go back, I would have decanted around 8am, wine was served around 6pm. FYI, we use a duck decanter]which from my experience takes much longer for the wine to oxidize, versus a more traditional vertical large-mouth decanter.

12/26/19, 2:56 PM - Good info on the tasting, JEP007. I’m curious what you thought about the 2013 Kathryn Hall as I have a couple of bottles left and my thought has been to hold off for a few more years.

12/26/19, 3:55 PM - @TXRDW - Hold off on popping it! I decanted that wine for four hours and it still wasn't ready. The least ready wine of the bunch, so we just put it aside. A few hours later, most of the others were almost dusted and this one had barely been dented, so I just corked it and put it away. Last night, I had a glass and still was shocked how dormant it was. I don't think this will ever be a wow wine, but in 5-10 years as it becomes more integrated, it might surprise me. I have one more bottle and would rather enjoy this wine's tertiary profile, than the fruit cocktail it's presenting today. I'll have another glass tonight and see if anything further has developed.

12/26/19, 4:50 PM - Thanks, and I agree regarding KH 2013 never becoming a ‘wow’ wine. Unfortunately I got sucked into the Hall marketing machine that touted the wine as a potential 100 pt bottle based on a barrel tasting review.

12/27/19, 7:03 PM - @TXRDW Poured a glass of the Hall this evening. Much better, but still a hot mess. Not flabby, but still lacking structure. Needs another 3 years minimum IMO.

12/31/19, 3:34 PM - I just read AG's annual review. His favorite value wine (under $50) in 2019 was Turnbull's Amoenus Cab. I'll have to source a bottle and compare. I wonder what other wineries source fruit from this vineyard, anyone know?
