January 11, 2020 - Tough wine to score. It's twelve years past the vintage. At this point I would expect secondary characteristics to begin to show. Nice Kirsch flavor but also tastes a bit alcoholic even though the label states 14.5%. Very Good, but shouldn't this be Excellent to Outstanding?

1/17/20, 2:17 PM - I had this on New Year´s eve and I absolutely loved it. I have had hundreds of Chateauneufs over the past 20 years and this particular one ranks very high in my personal list. Believe me this is special as it proves Ch9 can do elegant wines. Sometimes wines just don´t speak and sometimes the drinker is not receptive. If you have more bottles don´t worry. I am convinced it is a brilliant wine and it will demonstrate sooner or later. Honestly for me there is just one Ch9 that surpassed this and that was a 95 Rayas which I had the pleasure to drink only once. Both are expensive for Ch9 but in comparison VT is a bargain.

1/17/20, 3:27 PM - Thanks for your comments. Of all the Vieux Telegraphe vintages I’ve tasted (most of them going back to 1989), this is unhappily my least favorite. Fortunately, VT usually ages into something special. Witness the 1998, which, in the last decade, has taken on incredible depth. But for me 2007 doesn’t have the same interest 1998 showed at 12 years, and is hot as well. Oh well. If you are interested in more I could sell you 6-9 bottles from my original stash from KLWM.
    Cheers,

1/18/20, 4:02 PM - Thanks for the offer, but this is going to be complicated as I am German and that´s where I live. Funny enough I had the wine again tonight and was less excited, which reminds me that there are living creatures on both ends. I had only few bottles of 98 and I believe there is only one left. I remember this being very good, but I had bad luck with the corks. 2007 is super ripe, but I still think the VT is a model of restraint in this vintage, even if a bit of sweetness comes through.
