March 14, 2020 - Pato Baga Tasting (at home): Vertical of four Filipa Pato Bagas, the '15, '16, '17 Nossa Calcario (80+yr vines) and the '17 unoaked, amphore-fermented Post Quercus.

12.5% alcohol. The ’16 offers the most balanced bouquet on opening; and on the second day the most complex and spicy with tar and orange rind highlights.

It’s the least drenching on the attack but then beautifully cavernous and very deep. This has the most tannic structure of the three. Berry-driven but more sour with black fruit than the ’15 and the most saline of the three. The tiny bit of reduction became well integrated but not completely absent on day-two. Nanette loves the smokiness. Minerally and herbal. Her top choice of the three vintages. It does stand out.

The lovely powdery texture finishes a little rough--gently bitter, gently abrasive--but long and exigent too.

Wonderful to drink now, especially with a ton of air, and increasingly approachable over 24 hours open. No sense of how long these last but at least 10 more years for the '16. now-2030.
