March 31, 2020 - Dark garnet in the glass, flinty dark fruited nose with a hint of herbs and peppery spice throughout. Medium weight in the mouth, pleasing dryness to the tannins without being very astringent. This is a restrained, understated version of syrah, with limited black olive, tapenade and gamey notes. I find those so heavy and overbearing some times, but not here. There is plenty of acidity to take this for a good 5-10 years minimum. The spice/pepper notes carry all the way through to the end. I think I'm going to let these sit for a few years and then revisit.

4/4/20, 8:56 AM - Jen, I liked it because it was so different than the heavy bacon fat, black olive, gamey, meaty type we have here usually. The black pepper streak that ran through it was awesome but also so very different and I'm not that big a fan of black pepper where as Carol loads it on everything. It went on forever and after the wine was gone, you still had black pepper in the back of your throat. It wasn't strong, just front and center throughout. I'm going to be curious to see how this ages, because I don't recall it displaying any black pepper a year ago when tasted at the winery in SA. The fruit is very classy and very tasty but kind of restrained right now. I suspect this wine is in a slight shutdown mode at the moment. I'll be sure to save you a bottle!
