April 12, 2020 - Double decanted this wine for an Easter duck dinner. It was a little astringent on the first sips. However it paired beautifully with the duck - cutting through the rich meat nicely. But it's not really a wine I enjoyed without food so I will not likely buy again unless we’re serving duck in the future.
The wine looks crimson colored with fast legs. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells faintly like petrol and black pepper but honestly doesn't have much of a nose. It tastes like mineral, stoniness and black pepper. The body is medium with a narrow texture. The wine finishes medium and has medium acidity.
As a side note, we did a horizontal tasting with another Madiran from Château Peyros Madiran Vieilles Vignes. Both bottles were a 2014 vintage so I think a fair taste test. Both were also decanted for a similar time - about two hours. Everyone took turns trying each separate glass throughout their meal. The universal favourite was, in fact, the less expensive Domaine Mouréou - something to consider if you're looking at wines from this region in France.
