October 21, 2008 - This bottle was included in a 2001 blind tasting which included a '01 Beringer Private Reserve Cab, 01' Plumpjack Cab, '01 Columbia Crest Reserve Cab., '01 Piatelli Cab. (Argentina) and the '01 Opus. The 2001 Opus One was the clear unanimous winner of the blind tasting. The Columbia Crest Reserve Cab was a relatively close second. My rating of 95 was given on the wine itself and does not factor the price. The 2001 Opus has a dark inky purple garnet color with perfumes of ripe dark fruit and a little earth. It is a well structured and opulent Opus with large notes of black fruit and oak on the palate with nice acidity (but not as good as the '99 Opus). The finish lasts well over 30 sec. This wine has a great mouth feel and the tannin structure, while strong, does not seem to detract form the loads of ripe blackberry and cassis and make for a wine that is very enjoyable now but could still age for several years to come. Note: All bottles were decanted a minimum of 3 hours prior to tasting.
