October 4, 2019 - (September 1999 disgorgement). This opens with a surprisingly forceful pop of the cork and proceeds to pour with fine clarity and a decidedly lighter overall color than the 1971 DP drunk alongside it. It presents an airy, elegant bouquet showing more finesse than exoticism, featuring lovely aromas of light honey, lemon peel, apple skins, chalk and crushed shells layered atop a light vanilla beam. In the mouth, it again surprises with its elegance and sense of easy balance, delivering fascinating and giving layers of brioche, peanut brittle, yellow raisin, pale nut and orange fruit flavors supporting pretty top-notes of crushed wafer cookies, chalk and struck schist. It all hangs together wonderfully, with no sense of being stretched thin or having overly oxidized. With just five of us at the tasting, a return to this bottle about an hour later reveals the length and strength of this vintage... disgorgement date not withstanding. What a treat!
