October 3, 2020 - Dark garnet in appearance with a watery rim. Nice nose but faint of red and blue fruits with very slight oxidation but in a good way, raw meat, some wild game and no discernible oak. That palate is very lively and fresh, on the heavier end of medium-bodied, with some residual alcoholic heat peeking through. The flavor profile includes red, dark blue and even black fruits, tobacco, forest herbs, moderate vanilla cream and toasty oak, good amount of minerality especially towards the zippy and refreshing but slightly alcoholic finish. A very tasty and highly drinkable Marques de Riscal Reserva at this juncture but could certainly see the benefits of medium term cellar time. It paired extremely well with a plate full of sliced Manchego Semicurado. Although far from being the most complex Rioja Reserva out there in the market, but it’s certainly hard to be beat in terms of quality and price.
