October 7, 2020 - My first two bottles of Julie Balagny wines were flawed, sour and fizzy like (unfortunately) so many “natural” wines. So, I was skeptical when I opened this, but WOW was I pleased and impressed with this bottle. Double-decanted and served, it is wonderfully redolent of earth and ripe, sweet fruits, with myriad Asian spices and a very firm acid backbone that makes the wine both sweetish and sappy. For me, it is not at all typical of Gamay from Beaujolais. If blind I would have guessed Croatina, Vespolina or Uva Rara from Lombardy or Piemonte. Since I like those wines a lot, I like this one, too.

I have no idea how long this wine can age, but my instinct says “drink up”!

I am a huge fan of well-made Beaujolais normale and especially of the great cru Bojo, which I buy regularly and drink, from the best producers, at 5-10+ years of age. I bought Julie Balagny’s wines because of her reputation and now, after three bottles, the count is two flawed and one spectacular wine. So, maybe she still has lots of improvements to make, but when she gets it right the results are spectacular. [But don't expect typical Bojo.]
