January 5, 2021 - I have drank three bottles of Calon Segur 2005 in the last month, and 1 bottle was very soft, fresh and open (opened at the right time, a joy to drink), and 2 bottles were backward and less expressive (probably opened 3 or 4 years too early, tough drinking). Fresh plums and dark cherries dominate the palate, with a touch of cassis, blackberry and eucalyptus. While the tannin is relatively fine for a Calon Segur in early form, it is not entirely smooth, but rather chewy. There is some spice and a nice trace of salt typical of St. Estephe wines adding to the complexity. This is a rather classic vintage of Calon Segur, and will probably gain points from me over the next 10 or 15 years. Those who are lucky enough to open a bottle like the first one I mentioned will have a very nice drinking experience. But there is the risk of picking a relative unexpressive bottle in this vintage, as there seems to be quite alot of bottle variation.

1/19/21, 4:56 PM - Thanks for this excellent note. I especially like the context you give the note and how you remind readers that even with a relatively young wine like this (young by Calon Segur standards, anyway) there is often a lot of bottle variation and that one bottle cannot speak for the entire vintage.
