I only ask because I too, thought my last bottle was over the hill when I opened it (notes of stewed fruit and came across somewhat disjointed)...but I left half the bottle in the cellar for the next day and it was killer. It brightened up dramatically with much better balance.

I was taken aback by a fairly pungent jammy smell when opening the bottle that makes one fear to see next a ruby colored wine well beyond its prime. It did improve in the next hour or so and the bottle ended up being drunk. My tasting companion would agree with your assessment, even if he also considered there to be some end-of-life characteristics.
I had similar impressions with a previous bottle a year or so ago. Perhaps the bottles suffered from less-than-optimal storage when I bought them many years ago.
