July 20, 2021 - Tried this last week with Coravin after purple tooth posted a note reminding me o meant to check on it a while back but opened another 09 by mistake. Over the weekend the wine was great but not the wow of the 09 even with a couple hours of air. Was concerned as the cork seemed to move a bit with the Coravin pour and I thought maybe there would be a leak but it was ok. Certainly not flawed. But I felt like I should open it sooner as a result.

So, now a few days later-opened and decanted through the Venturi. Omg! Hello! Immediately a huge nose of smoke and dark fruit which I didn’t get a few days ago with Coravin. Reminded me of the amazing ‘09 but this time I knew I didn’t accidentally open the ‘09 again. With an hour in the glass, this is just awesome. Deep ruby almost purple core with light ruby rim. Aroma already complex with changes on every swirl and with time. I detect boysenberry and cafe mocha and some truffle. The flavor is on par with the aroma and there is some cherry and vanilla in the finish. Mouthfeel medium to dense and tannins slightly coarse and mouth coating but indicating a structure that should last for decades. Impossible not to take another sip, then another. Long long finish I mean LONG! Great with ravioli we had tonight but almost needs lamb or something like that. This is a huge wine. I think I benefitted from whatever happened with the cork during the Coravin a few days ago which somehow allowed a super slow ox and I didn’t have to wait hours as I expected to for it to open but I still think this wine is in the very early stage and I recommend hold unless you have a bunch of them and this should give the incredible 2009 a run for its money in the long run. I look forward to the first side by side comparison of these in a few years. Sure to improve. This is my kind of wine, st julien at its best in my opinion. I just might wind up finishing this bottle faster than I should. 96+

7/21/21, 5:29 AM - Thanks for the note on this! Nicely written! I only have one of these, which a store owner in France recommended when I asked for a good Bordeaux the I wouldn't be able to find in the States....Obviously it is here now! Based on your note, I will sit back and let this develop for a few more years....thank you!

7/23/21, 4:36 AM - I'd be drinking wine: This is not that easy wine to find in the US, that's true. But, I think you can find it in the US. I got mine from Zacky's and they have futures of this one almost every vintage I believe. I'm sure it's not the only source, but I bought the 2009 and 2010 from them and I have had good luck with their wines arriving with good Provenance. Right now, I do see the 2019 and 2020 futures available on Millesima.

8/7/21, 9:13 PM - Thanks Tri....This wine is a good value, and drinks above its price point. I will look into 19s and 20s!

8/8/21, 5:03 AM - I'd rather be drinking wine-I was thinking about the 2019 and 2020 also but I'm not sure I will live long enough to get them to that perfect window! Like you, I like them when they hit that early to mid drinking window when the balance is perfect. I did pick up the 2016 which sounds very promising. I like your profile and description of your point of view. Cheers!
