Community Tasting Note

  • Cristal2000 Likes this wine: 98 points

July 30, 2021 - Saw LPB finally rated the VV lineup and I was pretty surprised at the relatively low 95 given to the LPV. Given my exceptional experience recently with the 2019's, figured I would pop a bottle to give it my own evaluation. Important to note I doubled decanted, left at cellar temp for 3-4 hours and then warmed up to room temp before drinking. I think that really makes a difference with these wines.

Begins with expressive and powerful aromas of blackcurrant, baking spices, white flowers, crushed rock and hints of forest floor. Reflects the cooler vintage with extraordinary freshness and precision, showing great balance with mostly black fruit, bitter chocolate with lots of mineral driven and savory character. Super refined tannins are still very present, giving the impression it can age quite nicely for years to come. Builds powerfully in the mid palate with layers that are just emerging, and finishes for over 1 min. Really impressive and way better than 95. Perhaps I am low at 98. Definitely upside.

7/31/21, 7:10 AM - Also, thanks for the review. I have three of these in the cellar which is nice when peer reviews come in strong.

7/31/21, 7:59 AM - WL: She definitely does! And for that matter, so does Jeb. And before that, RP...so perhaps there's a trend there? :) Nevertheless, this was excellent and what I enjoyed most was it is a good reflection of the vintage. Very different than the 2019.

7/31/21, 8:01 AM - MJP: I always note the huge scores for Kapscandy Grand Vin. I remember having it one time, and it was super dry. I haven't given it enough consideration to really have a good opinion however. One thing: there are too many great cabs out there! I'm sure it's fabulous but if I'm not mistaken, it's pretty expensive as well.

7/31/21, 8:28 AM - Nice note, as usual, esp. the prep! One day I am going to get one of these VV wines on the secondary market to taste!

7/31/21, 8:57 AM - Sometimes we all get the urge to go slumming in the unsavory part of town CSIMM...

7/31/21, 10:53 AM - $382 at release. So yes, very price but seems to hold it's value after release.

7/31/21, 3:23 PM - Cristal- great review and prep info. When I tasted this last, I felt the absence of the BBS, whether it was reality or in my head… I am so glad this policy has shifted to include the better wine in the SV offerings- the step up in quakity shows in the 2019 SV IMO.

7/31/21, 4:13 PM - LITE: I hear you. It is hard to know the best juice is going somewhere else. One thing for sure is the 18 vintage is a different animal from 19. Some wineries (not naming names), try to make all their wines taste the same through some form of manipulation, but I think VV does a nice job reflecting the growing season and the vineyard. 18 was a way cooler vintage, so the fruit generally is not as flashy and opulent, but the freshness, structure and balance are pretty awesome. It's definitely an age worthy vintage. Have half the bottle left today and it's even a bit better than yesterday. Good sign.
