Community Tasting Note

  • Rote Kappelle Likes this wine: 91 points

September 4, 2021 - Under the disgraceful cork. Decanted and notes made about 5 hours after opening. Scored on the website's system rather than some opaque, idiosyncratic 'system'.

The first thing to note is that this is absurdly young to open a Brunello, but 2016 does offer that opportunity.

Colour is fairly deep red-brown with some redder hues. Typical Brunello.

Nose is of smoke, dried herbs, roasted soup bones, dark fruits and a lot of power.

Palate offers more fruit than the nose, but this wine is still pretty well locked up. Picking up some suggestion of oak (not quite vanilla, but partly texture and partly a smoky element - I will probably find out that this wine has never seen so much as a shaving of an old oak barrel!). Quite intense and very long, this wine is really on the very first steps of a long journey and I think it will put on body over the years. A lot of promise.

Scored 89 for drinking now, but could easily end up at 95-97 with about 5-10 years. 91 reflects a combination of where it is at now and where it is heading.
