Introduction

Benoit Germain was in town, and a small group of us got together for dinner and to taste through some of his new releases and a few older wines as well.

Flight 1 (14 notes)

White
2007 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Pernand-Vergelesses Les Combottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses
Clean, citrus and floral driven nose with a large mineral component as well. The palate has a nice richness of fruit, while still staying quite lean with a great backbone of minerality and acidity. Medium finish.

2008 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Pernand-Vergelesses Les Combottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses
Bigger, riper aromatics than the '07 served alongside. Ripe peach and lemon, the mineral is not a pronounced, but it is still there. Juicy fruit on the palate with good length. Great acidity. Both vintages are very good, though I prefer the '07 now.
White
2008 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Meursault Les Pellans France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Ripe yellow tropical fruits and lemon on both the nose and palate. A creamy palate and finish, though still with very nice acidity. Some nice backbone to the wine. Very good.
Red
2007 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Chorey-les-Beaune France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chorey-les-Beaune
Dark, crushed berries, chocolate, and mineral on the nose with some subtle spice. Dark fruit on the palate as well with some good mineral structure. Finish could be a bit longer, but still a great value.
Red
2007 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Beaune 1er Cru Domaine de Saux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
A very fragrant nose of crushed red berries, sweet wood, and brown spices. Dark berry on the palate with quite a bit of minerality and the oak is very present. Medium finish, good acidity, very tannic.
Red
2007 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Beaune 1er Cru Teurons France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Very powerful dark fruit aromatics with some nice spice. A lot of structure on the mineral driven palate. Dark fruit as well on the palate and brown spice throughout. Needs some time as there is quite a bit of tannin.
Red
2007 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Beaune 1er Cru Vignes Franches Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
As with the others in the line up, a very fragrant nose of dark, crushed berries and brown spice. The palate here however was a bit more soft and lush than the others. Sweet, dark fruit and wood notes, brown spice. Great grip to the wine and the finish is pretty lengthy. Very good.
Red
2007 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Beaune 1er Cru Les Cras Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
The nose was dominated by dark red berries and plum with cocoa and sweet cinnamon notes. Expansive on the palate with the same darker fruit and spice notes. Very lengthy finish with quite a bit of tannin. This wine has some great potential.
Red
2007 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Beaune 1er Cru Cuvée Tante Berthe France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Dark, crushed berries and plum with tons of sweet baking spice, mostly clove and cinnamon. The same fruit on the palate with the brown spice all throughout the palate. A very long finish with a huge mineral backbone. Great wine.
Red
2005 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Beaune 1er Cru Vignes Franches Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Decanted for roughly 6 hours before dinner. A very powerful nose of dark berry and brown baking spices. Mineral notes as well. Dark fruit on the palate with a lot of structure and grip to it. Lengthy finish. Lots of tannin and needs quite a bit of time.
Red
2005 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Beaune 1er Cru Teurons France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Decanted for roughly 6 hours before dinner. Dark berry fruit and cocoa on both the nose and palate with a huge amount of minerality. Lots of structure and grip. A great wine, though needs quite a bit of time.
Red
2002 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Beaune 1er Cru Teurons France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Flown over from the Domaine just 24 hours before dinner. A lot of earth on the nose and palate; not a lot of fruit. The group consensus is that it was just too shook up.
Red
2001 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Beaune 1er Cru Les Cras Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Very elegant nose of dried cranberry, plum, and earth with pretty brown spices. Very youthful palate with quite a bit of fruit and tannin. Great mineral backbone with a long finish. Great wine that still has a long life ahead of it.
Red
2001 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Beaune 1er Cru Cuvée Tante Berthe France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
A lot in common with the '07. Dark fruits, lots of brown baking spice, some chocolate notes too. A fruit forward palate with a lot of structure remaining. Good earthy notes as well. Still a very young wine. Great stuff.
