Deanna and I hosted two of our friends for a casual dinner at home.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

We started off the evening with some grilled shrimp marinated in ginger, lime, garlic, and thai chili along with various cheeses and some roasted marrow bones to go with the whites.

The first course was roasted squab breast, glazed with soy, and served with grilled spring onions and maitake mushroom. Then was a cassoulet style dish of white beans, confit rabbit leg, bacon, pearl onions, and duck fat. We finished off with a roasted bone in rib roast with asparagus and roasted yukon gold potatoes with duck fat and rosemary.

2002 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Pale yellow color that is just starting to darken and show some age. Ripe lemon on the nose with beautiful minerality. Some raw nut notes as well. Round, ripe fruits on the palate with good backbone and moderate acidity. Medium plus finish. Still very youthful.
1996 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
A darker yellow color that is showing its age. On the nose, aromas of honeyed lemon, roasted nut, marzipan, and honeysuckle with faint mineral notes. Full and rich yellow fruits on the palate, though the acid on the finish shows its age a bit. Nice mineral components. For coming from such young vines, this held up very well. Quite tasty.
1998 Bouchard Père et Fils La Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Romanée Grand Cru
Spicy red berries and earth on the nose with darker floral notes and a touch of soy. Soft on the palate, pretty red fruits with a nice mineral and earth notes. Good structure and nice acidity. A very pretty wine.
1995 Gaja Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Served alongside the 95 Costa Russi. This one showed better at the start; seductive aromas of dark red berries, leather, earth, tar, and rose petals, but after an hour or so the Costa Russi eclipsed it. Firm dark fruits on the palate wth a lot of minerality and drying acidity. Medium body and a medium plus finish. A good deal of tannin remains on the finish. A very nice wine.
1995 Gaja Barbaresco Costa Russi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Served alongside the Sori San Lorenzo. At first the Sori San Lorenzo was the star, but after an hour or so, the aromatics started to emerge and this wine was really singing. Dark red/almost black cherries and berry with a wonderful bit of earthiness. Rose petal, leather, and mineral as well. Firm on the palate with great acidity and huge mineral backbone. Great grip to it. Medium bodied and a medium plus finish.
2001 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine du Caillou Les Quartz France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Dark purple color with the slightest bit of fadiing on the rim. Huge, expressive nose of blue fruits (almost like blueberry syrup) on the nose with grilled savory herbs, some sweet spice and earth. A ripe palate (again of blueberries) with a nice earthy component and good structure. Some firm mineral in the background. I found the acidity on the finish to be refreshing. Medium plus body and a medium finish. Delicious.
1996 Château L'Evangile France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Dark red cherry and plum on the nose with earth, coffee bean, and the slightest bit of truffle. The same fruits on the palate. Medium body and finish. There was not a lot of tannin remaining; very easy to drink.
Red - Fortified
1929 Les Vignerons de Maury Maury France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Maury
A dark amber color. Aromatics of toffee/caramel, coffee and yellow raisins. A bit of cigar box as well. Sweet (but not overly so) on the palate with very nice acidity and a long finish. 16% alcohol is not noticable. Medium body.

A great night with great food, wine, and friends.
