An Aussie-American get together at El Gaucho

Monterrey, Mexico

Introduction

My company was bought by an Aussie conglomerate 2 years ago. Since then we get a lot of Aussie visitors. This week I had to host a big group of 'em at my favorite local steak house: El Gaucho. The beef here is not as fine as in the good American steakhouses, but it is prepared differently and it's very tasty. El Gaucho's house salad is a must.

To celebrate our common destinty, I brought two magnums representing each country.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
1999 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Dead Arm Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
88 points
Dark ruby with a slightly diffuse nose of blue berries and licorice. Medium to full bodied and lacking flavor depth to score higher. A dissapointing Dead Arm for sure.
Red
1999 Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Dark ruby and more evolved than I expected (given that it was a magnum). Slightly shy nose of black currant, blackberries and a hint of licorice. Medium to full bodied, lacking a bit of concentration in the mid palate. A pleasant Pride Cab that falls short when compared to the 1997, 1998, 2001, 2002 & 2003.

Closing

Both magnums were slightly dissapointing given the maker's pedigree and the big bottle formats.

Dinner ended and we headed off to do some male bonding mate! I got back home at 2AM and felt very tired all next day.
