We had (what was to me) kind of a mixed bag of wines on this occasion, but great company and excellent pizza.

Flight 1 (1 note)

2004 Pieropan Soave Classico La Rocca Italy, Veneto, Soave Classico
13% ABV. Medium gold in the glass. Somewhat reticent nose of honey and melon fruit. Medium bodied with slightly earthy (oxidated?) mineral notes. Interesting, but I don't love it. 90?

Blind Red 1 - Dark garnet, translucent towards the rim. Sweet olive Syrah fruit nose. Smells high toned and somewhat Northern Rhone like. Medium full bodied with high toned but rich sweet tart cherry fruit with a tangy finish that suggests some light iodine flavors. Pretty tasty. Fairly young. I was drawn in by the nose to think this could be Northern Rhone, but I overlooked the ripeness of the fruit. Good.
2005 Cantina del Glicine Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Blind red 2 - Translucent light to medium ruby with a clear hue throughout. Light berry nose. Medium bodied and a little vinous. Somewhat elegant and delicate. I thought this might be some kind of inexpensive Spanish wine or something, it just didn't have that much character to me, but John K nailed it as Nebbiolo. Surprisingly soft for Nebbiolo at that. I didn't really care for this, but others liked it much more - I think it might have been at least one person's WOTN.
2006 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Fontalloro Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Blind Red 3 - Dark garnet translucent. Aromas of old wood and sour cherry dust - very Tuscan smelling. Medium full bodied tart and tangy, redolent of sour cherries. Young, rather tannic with aggressive acidity. I got close on this one. Not my favorite though. 88-90?
2003 Domaine Tempier Bandol La Tourtine France, Provence, Bandol

Blind Red 4 - Dark garnet in the glass. Rich leathery nose with a slight hint of animal over red fruit. Medium full bodied with fresh, open knit sweet red fruit and a suggestion of wax. Tasty. This wound up being my WOTN, though I hate to be "that guy" who picks his contribution. Very good. 92+
2001 Vignamaggio Chianti Classico Riserva Castello di Monna Lisa Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

Blind Red 5 - Dark garnet translucent in the glass. Saddle leather nose. Medium full bodied and a little bit vinous/plain with tangy cherry fruit and rather light tannins at this point. Finishes a little short. Okay.
