Kitchak Cellars Private Tasting

The Metropolitan

Tasted May 11, 2010 by Mattshank with 482 views

Introduction

An excellent tasting by little known Kitchak Cellars. In attendance were both winery principals Peter Kitchak and Ralph Bashioum. The wines were great end to end showing the tremendous talent of what is really a fledgling winery with only a few vintages produced and released. The event was well ran and at a good venue complete with light fare and chamber music. Certainly one of the better events I have attended in some time. Thanks Peter and Ralph.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

Rosé
2007 Kitchak Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Scherzo USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
91 points
Nose: Deep, ripe juicy fruit aromas. Also very dark colored. Palate: Tannins present (surprisingly) with ripe watermelon, subtle spice on mid palate, and a long finish (for a Rose). A quite exceptional Rose and one of the best I've had in a while.
Rosé
2009 Kitchak Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Scherzo USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
90 points
Nose: Strawberries and some slight earthy notes. Palate: Very Provence-like with the strawberries showing. Lighter than the '07' and more traditional in style, however, I liked the '07' a little more for it's uniqueness. Nice blush.
White
2006 Kitchak Cellars Vivace Ermitage Blanc USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Nose: At first was not sure if this bottle was representative, but with air showed toasty, yeasty qualities and some lemon. Palate: Some lemon showing but much lighter and more feminine than the '07' and '08'.
White
2007 Kitchak Cellars Vivace Ermitage Blanc USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Nose: Some toasty oak with lemon and a hint of licorice (strange but cool). Palate: Candied lemon with good acidity, mineral hints and a medium to long finish. Very well made. My favorite of the three vintages.
White
2008 Kitchak Cellars Vivace Ermitage Blanc USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Nose: Less oak showing than the '07' with similar profile. Palate: Higher acidity than the '07' with spice, caramel and a medium length finish. A very slight bitterness on back palate keeps this otherwise flawless offering from overtaking the '07'.
Red
2006 Kitchak Cellars Adagio USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
92 points
Nose: Blackberry and assorted dark fruits and some cassis traces. Palate: Rich with evolved tannins and good acidity. Blackberry (tart and somewhat underripe) and some red fruits substrate. Clean finish. With more air gravel minerality shows. Well made.
Red
2006 Kitchak Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Concerto Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
93 points
Nose: Dark fruits, mineral and some spice. Palate: Soft, velvety tannins with dark fruits, mineral expression, impeccable balance, and a medium length finish. Very well made.
