Introduction

Great Monday evening tasting with the fun folks from the Wine Library forums. Bob and Isaac worked closely with Tim to create an amazing lineup with some truly interesting wines.

Flight 1 (11 notes)

White - Sparkling
1998 Ployez-Jacquemart Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
92 points
Nose of honeyed biscuit and citrus, mouth of lemon, honey and wheat toast with crispy minerality and tiny touch of aged-Riesling-like petrol. The mousse is a bit coarse but excellent overall.
White
2006 Domaine Servin Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
89 points
Found this a bit strange, wouldn't have pegged for Chablis - yellow gold in color, with a varietally strange nose of sweet flowers and butter and what I'd call "gym class" - a combination of rubber and linoleum and something a bit ripe. Good clean minerally finish shakes it all off. Interesting, certainly, but attractive? Not sure.
White
2008 Domaine Servin Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
91 points
If you were to peel a lime and then rinse your hands in ocean water, this is what they would smell like afterward. Lime and salt nose, citrus and seaweed on the palate, lots of acidity, nice dry finish with a touch of pepper.
White
2007 F.X. Pichler Riesling Smaragd Ried Steinertal Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
95 points
My first words on first sniff were, "Well, THIS is a party." Ton going on here from start to finish. First of all, a beautiful nose of peach and pears and something richer. Segues perfectly toward a peach blossom mouth - full body lushness gives way to a crisp grapefruit-like overtone and then a finish reminiscent of jalapeno and lime. Has both decadence and edges - really an education for me in terms of the range a single Riesling can display. Lovely.
White
2007 F.X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Smaragd 'M' Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
94 points
White pepper by the loads on the nose, which persists toward a tropical but grassy palate, with apple skin and some kind of dried leaves - some called it tobacco, others bay leaf - I was wondering whether it was lavender or sandalwood - something feminine but slightly vegetal. The nearly Sauvignon-like flavor profile is contrasted by a lusher body. Totally interesting wine.
White
2007 Albert Mann Gewurztraminer Furstentum Vieilles Vignes France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
89 points
Nose of tangerine and honey, satiny mouth of orange and pith and smoke, nice length and creaminess, but confused by a heat at the end that turned this a bit inside out for me.
Red
2003 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Rouge France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre Rouge
86 points
Found this quite strange - didn't know what to make of it other than didn't like it much. On the nose, smells just like Drum tobacco - and that bit of menthol persists throughout a sour cherry mouth and a cedary finish.
Red
2007 Schiefer Blaufränkisch Ried Reihburg Austria, Burgenland, Südburgenland
90 points
Nose of peat moss and iodine and smoke. In the mouth, ton of dark fruits - overripe blackberries and tea and green pepper. Ripeness and oily texture are balanced by a stony finish. Concentrated, multidimensional, and certainly complex - just not the flavors that get me going in particular. Could see a palate with different preferences calling this a 95 point wine.
Red
2001 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
Herbs, cherry and horsehair nose - tar and figs bridge nose and mouth of red fruits and cassis. Super-long finish with a nutty aftertone.
Red
2006 Yann Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
92 points
Smoky, beefy nose with silky cherries and licorice and all-spice and thyme. Best description I heard at the tasting was liquid beef jerky. Had to buy just to see what happens to a wine like this with 10 years of age.
Red
2005 Domaine des Lambrays Morey St. Denis France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis
88 points
Big black licorice stick on the nose, clean and bright fruit. Slightly briny finish, almost fishy. Seems a bit wiry, if you will - a tad angular and light bodied. Interesting, not my style, but probably will be more expressive in a few years once the edges are a bit more rounded.
