Introduction

This was a speed dating event with white wines. Each producer had 5 minutes to describe and pour us the wines, and we had the same five minutes to taste them and write up our notes.

Flight 1 (13 notes)

White
2008 Duck Pond Pinot Gris USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
85 points
The nose is a bit musty, with some sweet pear scents showing as well. Apple flavors appear on the front end, with some green apple peel appearing later. The acidity is full, and dries things out a bit later. Everything is clean, but nothing really jumps out at me.
White
2009 Castello Banfi Centine Bianco Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
86 points
The nose has a rich touch with honeysuckle and kiwi delivering thick scents. Some pineapple notes appear and lighten things up a bit, but the nose is quite full. The wine is surprisingly crisp on the palate, and the kiwi fruit shows quickly. The wine takes on a nice juicy texture before the fruit fades fairly quickly. The acidity starts out nicely, but it does have a rougher touch on the finish which detracts from the good fruit a bit. 86+
White
2009 Charles Smith Riesling Kung Fu Girl USA, Washington
87 points
The nose is straightforward and delivers simple, but clean and enjoyable apple notes. The apple flavors on the palate are solid as well, and the acidity runs across the whole mouth. Some sweetness makes an appearance on the mid palate, but the acidity works with it well, making this an enjoyable bottle with good QPR. 87+
White
2009 K Vintners Viognier USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
89 points
Celery stalks and some light peach scents show on the nose, making for an interesting experience. Minerality hits the palate immediately along with some very clean apple flavors. The fruit is very full in contrast to most of the Viognier I've tasted, with juicy pears and green pepper flavors showing on the mid palate and lingering long. The texture is great, and the fruit is interesting and pretty enjoyable. 89-
White
2008 Jordan Vineyard & Winery Chardonnay Russian River Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
88 points
The nose suggests that this is a bigger style of chardonnay, with buttery oak and bananas showing right away. Some spicy nutmeg plays well with the rich scents, and a bit of faint apple suggests complexity. The oak is full, but it's already well integrated. The acidity is balanced on the palate, and both red and green apple flavors show. That's a new one for me! The apple flavors linger underneath the oak, but the balance remains intact. 88+
White
2008 ÀMaurice Cellars Viognier USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
86 points
Pears show on the nose, along with some banana and lighter oak scents. The fruit is rich on the palate, and it reminds me of pears. Some spice shows too, along with a bit of heat. The fruit lingers well, and the flavors grow with the intensity of the acidity on the finish. Interesting.
White
2008 Cadaretta sbs Columbia Valley USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
88 points
The nose here strikes me immediately as fresh white cake cupcakes with frosting, and a bit of pineapple baked inside. The texture is rich and soft, with peach and flavors showing well on the mid to late palate. The acidity works nicely across the full experience, and it takes over oat the end. 88+
Rosé
2009 The Crusher Pinot Noir Rosé Wilson Vineyard USA, California, Central Valley, Clarksburg
88 points
Strawberries show fully on the nose along with a hint of red earth. Strawberry and cherry flavors have a light touch on the palate, and the wine overall has a softer texture than I'm used to in rose. A melon note appears on the mid palate, and the strawberries become darker as they run out on the finish with the soft texture. Mid strength acid contributes to this soft feeling, and it makes for an interesting rose, even if I am partial to more acidity.
White
2009 Cornerstone Cellars Sauvignon Blanc USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
82 points
Pears, light yellow cake, and a bit of smoke show on the nose. This wine has a thick texture, and mid strength acidity that sticks around for a while. Some pear flavors show, but there isn't a whole lot of fruit. The heavy texture persists through the finish.
White
2008 Concannon Vineyard Chardonnay Conservancy Livermore Valley USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley
87 points
Full on oak comes roaring out of the glass to let you know exactly what kind of chardonnay you have on hand. Some floral notes appear as well, and after more thoughtful sniffs, some grapefruit appears in the background and leaves me with hope that there may be some good fruit and acidity to work with the big oak. The wine starts with a soft touch on the palate, and the full, buttery oak plays out from beginning to end. Some acidity does show on the mid palate, and some young apple flavors play here as well. The fruit and oak both show some evolution on the finish, in an enjoyable way. Again, the oak is in full force here, but if you're into that, you'd probably enjoy this wine quite a bit.
White
2009 Neethlingshof Estate Chardonnay Unwooded Stellenbosch South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
88 points
A cool fact with this wine, is that the importer buys carbon offsets for all imports into the USA. Yellow and green apple scents show on the nose, as well as something that suggests minerality. Clean, crisp, and consistent apple flavors show on the palate along with a hint of richness. The acidity lingers well, making the mouth water later. The fruit remains clean from beginning to end.
White
2008 L'Ecole No. 41 Sémillon USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
90 points
The nose is enticing and complex with some apple and lemon scents mixing with a fresh baguette. The notes all complement each other well. Lovely fruit flavors show on the palate here, with the apples and fresh lemons working very well together. The richness that I often find in Sémillon doesn't appear until the finish when some balanced oak makes an appearance as well. This is an interesting and fully enjoyable evolution that remains fun sip after sip. Combine this with some solid fruit flavors, and you have a winner!
White
2009 Big House Wine Company Big House White USA, California
86 points
Pears and peaches show on the nose. The acidity is lower on the palate, but it still is enjoyable. A bit of sweet peach flavors show as well. The wine is simple, but clean and pleasant.
