Introduction

This was the weekly guided Austrian wine tasting for hotel guests at Hotel Felben in Mittersill Austria.

Flight 1 - A pink sparkler to start (1 note)

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Wohlmuth Blauer Wildbacher Schilcher Frizzante Austria, Styria, Südsteiermark
86 points
First wine of an Austrian tasting evening. Very pink with a pleasant aroma. Quite refreshing. Tastes of summer fruits but avoids being sweet.

Flight 2 - The whites (3 notes)

White
2008 Freie Weingärtner Wachau / Domäne Wachau Riesling Federspiel Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
87 points
A delicate riesling with good minerality and typical apricot fruit. Lacks the oomph I look for in a riesling but nicely made and very drinkable.
White
2006 Salzl Chardonnay New Style Römerstein Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
84 points
New style should tell you everything you need to know...a heavily oaked chardonnay. Of its type, not bad avoiding the butteriness of the worst Australian offenders but not my thing.
White
2008 Pongratz Sauvignon Blanc Kranachberg Austria, Styria, Südsteiermark
88 points
An interesting SB, more restrained than the Kiwi offerings but still full flavoured. Fruity (but not tropical) with a nice spicy finish.

Flight 3 - The reds (4 notes)

Red
2007 Weingut Glatzer St. Laurent Altenberg Austria, Niederösterreich, Carnuntum
87 points
An unusual grape variety. Bright and fruity with well integrated oak. I enjoyed this.
Red
2006 Salzl Zweigelt Barrique Ried Römerstein Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
84 points
Full bodied, spicy red but a bit too oaked for my taste.
Red
2006 Weingut Franz Taferner Excalibur Carnuntum Austria, Niederösterreich, Carnuntum
88 points
A blend of blaufrankisch and zweigelt - Deep red with cherry and bitter chocolate. Good.
Red
2006 Souveräner Malteser Ritterorden (Lenz Moser) Merlot mailberg Austria, Niederösterreich
89 points
An excellent wine, grew in complexity in the glass. Deep red, lots of plum and bitter fruit, dry with well integrated tanins.
