Flight 1 - WHITE (3 notes)

White
2000 Pahlmeyer Chardonnay Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
It needed quite a bit of time to open and blow some oak off before it started to show some complexity and more butterscotch notes. It certainly has a stunning amount of wood. The mouth feel is incredible. This is palate coating stuff, especially for a white wine.
White
1999 Amity Vineyards Dry Gewürztraminer USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Faint, muted, plastic nose. This is pleasant, not very complex, and not very much acid.
White - Off-dry
1990 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
I don't have any detailed notes, but I do recall enjoying this and seeing the signature diesel element.

Flight 2 - PINOT (13 notes)

Red
1997 Beaulieu Vineyard Pinot Noir Carneros USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
82 points
Hot and a bit funky on the nose. Not much fruit on the palate. Tight finish.
Red
1997 Foxen Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley
88 points
Metallic, funky, cherry on the nose. Mouth-filling, a bit hot with a sweet entry. Powerful finish.
Red
1997 Marimar Estate Pinot Noir Don Miguel Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
84 points
Charcoal and cherry on the nose. Charcoal on the palate. Drying and tight on the finish. No fruit to be found.
Red
1996 Lynmar Estate Pinot Noir Quail Hill Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
87 points
Alluring nose, dusty cherry. Nice fruit on the entry, nice balance, very silky, still some nice structure. A bit hot on the finish?!?
Red
1996 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Russian River Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
90 points
Classic Pinot nose, scents of pine. On the palate this is dry, impeccably balanced, with nice acidity. The finish is clean and is gaining power with time in the glass.
Red
1997 J. Rochioli Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
78 points
Disgusting nose of creamy, thick latex paint. This has a nice mouthfeel, but the flawed nose ruins the experience.
Red
1994 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Very dark, extracted. Hot, smoky, bitter and unyielding. Really awful showing, not worth even rating.
Red
1994 Silvan Ridge Pinot Noir Visconti Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
85 points
Cherry nose. Sweet entry. Simple drink.
Red
1997 Yamhill Valley Vineyards Pinot Noir Reserve USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
flawed
Kirsch, sweet nose. Highly madeirized, banana on the palate. Flat and thin. Cooked. Not rated.
Red
1995 Chehalem Pinot Noir Ridgecrest Vineyards USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
flawed
CORKED!
Red
1997 Secret House Pinot Noir Reserve USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Sweet and sour. Spritzey. Nasty! Not rated.
Red
1998 Columbia Crest Pinot Noir Reserve USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
84 points
Candied, oaky, spicy. Simple drink.
Red
1998 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Seven Springs Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Spicy, complex nose. Lively palate.

Flight 3 - DESSERT (6 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
N.V. Beaulieu Vineyard Muscat de Beaulieu USA, California
Syrupy, unctuous, orange, chocolate. Pleasant.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1996 Beringer Vineyards Nightingale USA, California, Napa Valley
This is a dessert wine consisting of 70% Semillon and 30% Sauvignon. Chocolatey, spirity nose. Simple, nice palate, sweetness. Not much finish.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1995 Columbia Crest Sémillon Late Harvest USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
The first 375ml bottle was corked, so Roy opened a second. Pleasant. Plastic.
Red
1995 Ridge Geyserville USA, California, Sonoma County
Roy trotted this out after being so depressed about all the poor Pinot that emerged from his cellar. (An unlucky night in this regard!) This had a KNOCKOUT nose, boisterous, and peppery. On the palate this showed less fruit than I expected. That said, it develops a nice sweetness in the glass, even, balanced, although perhaps a bit flat. This shows a nice finish, but with time it starts to fall apart in the glass more quickly than I would expect.
White - Fortified
1880 Power Drury & Co. Madeira Malmsey Portugal, Madeira
One word: Impressive! Roy even sent me home with a 1/3 bottle which I enjoyed over the next 4 weeks. Really delicious stuff. Complex, beautiful!
