Introduction

Cépages et vins atypiques

Flight 1 - First flight (4 notes)

Red
2008 Dragon's Hollow Cabernet Sauvignon China, Eastern Foot of He Lan Mountain Appellation
69 points
From a vineyard at the same latitude as Napa ... this is the only similarity to a Napa Cab. Excellent for practice to spit out.
Red
2008 Kir-Yianni Paranga Greece, Macedonia
72 points
45% Xynomavro plus Merlot and Syrah. Gets some spice from syrah. Taste like a cheap dolcetto. Hope Greek wineries can do better...
Red
2008 Calina Carménère Reserva Chile, Maule Valley
82 points
87% Carmenere, Didnt get the greeness or tomato scent often present in Chilean wines. Nice fruit, no strong oak (9 months in french oak) is apparent. Nice balance. The best of the flight by far.
Red
2006 Miolo Quinta do Seival Castas Portuguesas Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, Campanha
71 points
Touriga Nacional, Tinta roriz and afrocheiro. Port grapes for brasilan wine. Interesting on paper, not so much in the glass. As bad as the Chinese wine, but with more power...

Flight 2 - Second flight (4 notes)

Red
2004 Mezzacorona Teroldego Rotaliano NOS Riserva Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Trentino, Teroldego Rotaliano
87 points
Teroldego from Northern Italy. Great nose of violet and liquorice. Nice intense black fruits flavors. Complex but a bit short. Correctly priced at 34$
Red
2005 Château La Baronne Corbières Montagne d'Alaric Piece de Roche France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Corbières
83 points
100% Carignan from 100+ years old vines. deep colour. Some dark berries aromas. Medium body, smooth acidity and tannins. Not bad, but at 49 bucks...
Red
2006 Saiagricola Sagrantino di Montefalco Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Sagrantino di Montefalco
83 points
From Umbria. Weird first nose of sweat and wet paper. Bretts ??? went away after a few minutes. Nothing bad, nothing great, should we add something ? next wine please !
Red
2007 Vigne di Rasciatano Rasciatano Puglia IGT Italy, Puglia, Puglia IGT
88 points
60% Nero di troia from Puglia. Ever heard of this one ? Liquorice and peper on the nose. Dense fruit with lots a dry tannins and wood. A bit out of balance right now, but will evolve with a few years of bottle.

Flight 3 - Third flight (3 notes)

Red
2006 Descendientes de José Palacios Bierzo Corullon San Martin Spain, Castilla y León, Bierzo
91 points
100% Mencia from Bierzo. Spices, leather, balckberries. Fresh but powerfull. Can live for a least 15 more years. Great wine ! 80$ and worth it
Red
2006 Donnafugata Contessa Entellina Mille e una notte Italy, Sicily, Contessa Entellina
88 points
Nero D'avola from Sicily. Tar, graphite and leather are proeminent. Too much of everything for now. Needs a few more to open.
Red
2004 Allegrini La Poja Veronese IGT Italy, Veneto, Veronese IGT
87 points
100% Corvina. 15,5% alcohol, we serve it a few degrees too hot and itl showed a bit. Nice concentration of red fruit and refined oak. A bit sweet. Would like to have it alone at right temperature...
