Introduction

The usual group took another crack at California Zin.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

Red
2007 Storybook Mountain Vineyards Zinfandel Mayacamas Range USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Pure fruit driven nose with plums and dark berries and just a hint of coffee. Quite ripe in the palate, with blackberries and a little blueberry, with nice zip and quite lithe on the palate. Finishes with coffee and toast with berries in the background. Nimble and focused, with good complexity with spice and pepper riding on the focused fruits driven backbone.
Red
2006 Storybook Mountain Vineyards Zinfandel Eastern Exposures USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Bright red fruit nose with a hint of white pepper. Round ripe palate, but light and nimble and red fruit . flavors mixed with blackberries. Nice crisp creamy finish. Nicely done with good acidity.
Red
2007 Mendocino Wine Company Zinfandel Zig Zag Zin USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County
89 points
Ripe nose, with red berry profile with some cassis and currants mixed in with boysenberry and black pepper. Concentrated and fruit driven palate, with a slightly heavy feel, but hangs on the palate with a finish of fruit and cream. Quite Zin-like and well done, just missing a little spice and complexity
Red
2007 Michael-David Vineyards Zinfandel 7 Deadly Zins USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi
86 points
Some heat on the nose with currants and a slight pepper note. Ripe dark fruit palate with some rich toast flavors. Slightly clipped and simple finish. Doesn’t have the complexity of the other Zins and suffers in comparison, but an enjoyable wine.
Red
2006 Hartford / Hartford Court Zinfandel Russian River Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
92 points
Expressive complex nose of plum and currants, with a strong pepper quality. Viscous mouth coating palate, with enough acidity to keep things fresh. Vibrant dark fruit palate, with boysenberry highlights and leading into a lengthy finish of coffee, pepper and currants. Great balance and complexity and fine tannic grip on the back end. My WOTN.
Red
2008 Cline Cellars Zinfandel Ancient Vines USA, California
88 points
Fine sweet raspberry nose. Palate quite sweet and concentrated, with cassis, raspberries, and strawberry, leading into a medium creamy finish. While it holds it alcohol well, was quite round and heavy on the palate. One dimensional ripe fruit. A disappointing effort from Cline.
Red
2007 Klinker Brick Zinfandel Old Vine Old Ghost USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi
82 points
My wine and bought on recommendation. From the start, exactly the wine I don’t enjoy. Alcoholic nose with big roasted fruits and coffee. Very sweet and extracted and overdone palate, with dark roasted fruits and lots of coffee and vanilla oak flavors. Manipulated and overdone. Not a wine I enjoy.
Red
2007 Turley Zinfandel Dogtown Vineyard USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi
91 points
Sweet and ripe nose, with licorice , plum and currants—a touch hot. No real sweetness on the palate despite the nose, but ripe dark fruits with a little smoke and meat. Lengthy finish that holds the palate. Round and lush mouthfeel, with some fine tannins the background. Good complexity and decent balance, if a bit of heat on the backend. Quite good. The group’s WOTN.

Closing

Overall, a nice selection of styles across California. The Turley was the clear favorite of the group, with Storybook and Hartford having their own champions.
