Introduction
All wines open 24 hours.
Flight 1 (6 notes)
White
2008 Aurelien Verdet Chardonnay Bourgogne Blanc
Brisk, bright nose of lemon/lime citrus oils, toasted nuts. Zingy, bright citric palate with underripe pear and a touch of toasty wood that plays well with the other flavors. Something of a lightweight but quite tasteful for what it is. Bottle open 24 hours.
Red
2008 Aurelien Verdet Bourgogne En Luteniere
Striking nose of Christmas spice and Cointreau. Ripe, slightly baked red fruit of good concentration with an interesting earthy, vegetal component. Ready to drink, with just a whisper of structure across the middle. Rather short on the back of the palate. Blind I might have taken it for a solid cru Beaujolais from Brouilly. Bottle open 24 hours.
Red
2005 Domaine du Meix-Foulot Mercurey 1er Cru Les Saumonts
Touch of purple paint on the noise, with lifted, slightly estery black cherry notes. More pleasing palate, with spicy sweet red berries and a rich, concentrated ‘05 midpalate. Good acidity and some chalky, pleasing tannins. Perhaps a whisper of well-integrated wood. Slight warmth on the back of the palate. Good wine. Bottle open 24 hours.
Red
2005 Domaine du Meix-Foulot Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Château de Montaigu
Vine ages from 20 to 55 years. More sauvage nose than the Saumonts, with hints of Christmas spice, tobacco, mineral. Much fresher palate than expected, floral and really quite pretty with riper cherry fruit, some earthy/vegetal notes. Much prettier and more feminine than the Saumonts. Moderately structured with a touch of astringence on the back; will benefit from some aging. Really striking and perhaps the finest Mercurey I’ve tasted. Was not surprised to see Neal’s imprimatur on the back label. Bottle open 24 hours.
Red
2006 Albert Morot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Bataillère Aux Vergelesses
Strikingly developed, gamey nose. Funky notes of cooked fruit and aged game birds. Similarly developed palate with baked/dried red fruits, iron, blood, mushroom, jerky. Fine acids and just moderately structured. Very rustic, old school wine, almost comes across as something from the Northern Rhone with age. Bottle open 24 hours.
Red
2006 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Teurons
Soft, ripe fruit nose with black cherry, licorice and dried currants. Like the monopole this also comes across as surprisingly developed. Concentrated, earthy palate with good acids and slightly chalky tannins. A wild little wine, although an oddly out of place note of vanilla detracts. Bottle open 24 hours.
