White
2008 Bodegas La Cana Albariño Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas

Tasted blind. Flinty, slightly grassy nose with nice peach and tropical fruits. There is some real depth and richness that's almost waxy and pretty intriguing. Lemon, grapefruit pith, chalky tart palate. No oak, dry, very nice acidity and weight. I'm thinking new world Sauv. Blanc but not surprised at the reveal. These wines tend to overperform for the money. Very good.

Flight 2 (1 note)

Red
2004 Domini de la Cartoixa Priorat Galena Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Spicy mocha oak nose. Awkward palate not showing the depth and fruit I'm used to. Not a good showing.

Flight 3 (1 note)

Red
1997 Havens Wine Cellars Bourriquot USA, California, Napa Valley

Tasted blind. Maturing nose with plum, chocolate, and a nice vegetal/peppercorn element. Spicy, earthy, incense palate with great acidity, smoke and nice ripe fruit. Impressive. I guessed Italian Cabernet.

Flight 4 (1 note)

Red
2001 Meerlust Rubicon South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
flawed
TCA

Flight 5 (1 note)

Red
2004 Viña Alicia Nebbiolo Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo
88 points
Tasted blind. Impressive nose of ripe purple fruit, mineral, grape, plums. Cocoa powder, roses, tight and grippy. Pretty primary and hard to pin down. I guessed new world Petit Sirah.

Flight 6 (1 note)

Red
2003 Massena Shiraz The Eleventh Hour Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Tasted blind. Pruney, superripe toothpaste nose. Spice, coffee, heat and toast. Low acid and tannin. I immediately guessed Barossa Syrah. Not a good showing.

Flight 7 (2 notes)

Red
2000 Anciano Tempranillo Valdepeñas Gran Reserva - Aged 10 Years Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Valdepeñas

Tasted blind. Simple, linear nose of soapy fruit. Some complexity but not much. I guessed Malbec. Not mch typicity here.
Red
2007 Jim Barry Shiraz The Lodge Hill Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
Tasted blind. Licorice, oak, dark sweet fruit. Tones of cinnamon and nutmeg on the nose. This is really big! Some nice minty/vegetal streaks to complement the ripe fruit. I actually liked this more than the awkward Massena as it was much more in balance and had better framing for the big fruit.
