Introduction

Stopped by Cru to try some of their thematic flights.

Flight 1 - "Royal Riesling" (3 notes)

White
2009 Loosen Bros. Riesling Dr. L Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
84 points
Full-bodied riesling with juicy tropical fruits. Palate was full of candied pears, apricots, and peaches. Creamy mouthfeel. Decent.
White
2008 Mönchhof Robert Eymael Riesling Estate Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
86 points
Lots of zesty acidity on the initial attack. White flowers, crushed stones, and white peaches dominate the palate. Nice wine.
White
2006 Helfrich Riesling Steinklotz France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
89 points
Nose of cucumber, minerals, light pineapple, beeswax, and some light petrol notes. Powerful, complex wine. Nice acidity with florals, minerals, light tropical fruits and a subtle waxiness on the palate.

Flight 2 - "French Kiss" (3 notes)

Red
2003 Domaine Lignères Corbières Le Signal France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Corbières
84 points
Dark fruit on the nose with warm spices, some meatiness and ripe cherries. Caramel, warm chocolate, plums, and cassis on the palate. Finish was barely there....
Red
2008 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape Télégramme France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
85 points
Floral notes dominate the nose with some red fruit peaking through. Palate is smooth but doesn't come across with much complexity. Subtle fruit is the big player here, but not in a sexy way...more in a thin, depressing style. Disappointing.
Red
2006 Château de Pez France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
88 points
Cedar, cranberry, sauteed mushrooms and spicy oak on the nose. Smooth on the palate. Not a complex or overly thought provoking Bordeaux but it is approachable and has sweet tannis on the finish. Nice opportunity to try a 2006 Bordeaux that's ready to go.

Flight 3 - "Habla Espanol?" (3 notes)

Red
2005 Clua Domenech Terra Alta Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Terra Alta
85 points
Nose has jammy tones, spicy vanilla, hints of flavored tobacco and burnt wood. Red fruit dominate the palate with blackberry jam and violets coming through as well.
Red
2008 López Cristóbal Ribera del Duero Tinto Roble Finca La Linde Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
86 points
Coffee and caramel on the nose with rich chocolate added in. Black fruits, and a hint of tobacco round this out.
Red
2008 Bodega Numanthia Toro Termes Spain, Castilla y León, Toro
86 points
Rich nose of blackberry/blueberry compote. Full bodied wine that I don't find too complex. Big fruit, minimal structure. Disappointing.
