Introduction

Flight 1 (11 notes)

Rosé
2009 Cep Vineyards Rosé Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Bright floral nose with raspberries and strawberry. Clean fresh palate with lovely acidity, just a hint of alcohol and mineral finish. Perfect starter.
Red
1989 Château Gazin Pomerol France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Well stored bottle with mid-neck fill. Perfect cork. Popped and poured. Wonderful expressive full nose of plum and currants, with a touch of mint and cedar. Plenty of slightly chalky tannins still present, with a medium bodied palate of dark fruit, tobacco, and leather. Nice medium length finish of coffee and cedar spice. The fruit dried up after being open 2hrs with the oak flavors taking over, I think implying that this should be drunk soon, though the tannins and balance would imply that it won't drop off a cliff. Great, mature right bank bdx. Will look for more.
Red
2007 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

I really needed to spend more time with this wine. Fresh, focused nose with wild berries and raspberry. Refined, focused palate with strong acidity and bright clean fruit and fine dry tannins. Didn't get any of the garrigue or barnyard from previous vintages, but this also isn't nearly as overdone as many '07's. Tight, earth, tar and cherry on the finish. Needs lots of time.

Nose of cardboard and stripped of fruit. Unlike any other beaucastel i've ever had. TCA.
Red
2005 K Vintners Syrah Morrison Lane USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
92 points
Expressive nose of pepper, meat, and spice, with a touch of candied red fruits. Focused slightly tight palate, with fine tannic structure, with ripe fruit--but not overdone. Lengthy mocha, vanilla and currant finish with just a hint of pepper. Really well done syrah just starting to integrate. Should improve over the next few years.
Red
2006 Carlisle Two Acres USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
92 points
Lovely, dense fruit driven nose with some toast, cassis, currants and hint of pepper. Ripe palate, but graceful and balanced, with chewy tannins that turn sweet with a mocha vanilla finish. Great red blend with perfect infusion of oak. Wish I could get on the Carlisle list.
Red
2007 Lagier Meredith Syrah USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder
90 points
Very ripe, dense concentrated nose of boysenberry, plum, and raspberry. Sweetness to the palate, with hint of candied vanilla cream and barely noticeable tannins. Surprising for this wine as I usually like it quite a bit but the sweetness rather than a a balanced rusticness turned me off a bit. Tightened up with air and showed a more typical fruit-earth flavor profile, so maybe just needs time to shed its baby fat.

2008 Switchback Ridge Petite Sirah Peterson Family Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Huge wine. Big, rich and slightly sweet nose with black currants, plum, and touch of strawberry. Huge chunky tannins on the palate with a strong sweetness to the fruit and subtle but noticible alcohol. Nice length on the finish. Strong wine, just not my style or flavor profile.

2007 Bodegas El Nido Jumilla Clio Spain, Murcia, Jumilla
91 points
Mild port-like nose with boysenberry, blueberries, and creamy vanilla. Dense concentrated and smooth palate that carries the alcohol well. Plenty of glycerin with its dark fruit profile and a lengthy oak infused finish. Slightly heavy. Not a style I prefer, but well made for what it is. Will it age?

2003 Darioush Shiraz USA, California, Napa Valley

A big loud wine. Port-like nose, mild heat on the nose with ripe sweet dark fruits. Dense concentrated palate, very dark fruit profile, with soft mouth coating feel and a lengthy finish with heat on the backend. The only wine of the night that the alcohol bothered me and detracted. With the name "shiraz" you know the style they are going for.
Red
2004 Talenti Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
92 points
Crushed red fruit nose, very bright, with cherry and cassis. Pleasant, ripe palate, strong acidity, and strong mineral palate. Lengthy complex finish. Dusty fine tannins. Enjoyable now, but should age very well. From 375ml.
