Introduction

This was a rather unplanned get-together that was organized very late in our vacation in the beautiful state of Morelia in Central Mexico. My cousin drove up from Guadalajara with his SUV packed with a grill, a lot of juicy arrachera (flank steak), charcoal, ripe avocados, quesadillas, etc.

Lake Zirahuen is a beautiful smallish lake in western Michoacan.

Wines were served in appropriately sized...plastic cups!!!

Flight 1 (4 notes)

White
2003 Newton Chardonnay Unfiltered USA, California, Napa Valley

Very nice Chardonnay. Not overdone, lots of fruit, low acidity. Not as good as a 2002 Beringer Dbragia reserve I had a couple of months ago, but very enjoyable nevertheless.
Red
2002 Two Hands Shiraz Lily's Garden Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
91 points
Drank in beauiful Zirahuen Lake near Morelia, Mexico (a colonial jewl!). Purple black with very opulent aroma of blueberries, licorice and flowers. Thick and concentrated but not heavy, it conceals its high alcohol better than other Aussie Shiraz. Pleasant fruity finish. This is good.
Red
1999 Hanna Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
90 points
Drank in beautiful Lake Zirahuen in Central Mexico. Not as great as last bottle and not nearly as great as a 2001 I had last month, but still an excellent wine.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2000 Zind-Humbrecht Tokay Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal Sélection de Grains Nobles France, Alsace
94 points
Drank as the epilogue of a great and rtaher improvised steak grilling at the shores of lake Zirahuen in Central Mexico. Not as divine as the 1998, but almost as exhilaratingly electric. Profund botrytis, long finish and incredible acidity.

Closing

Despite the lack of planning and improvised nature of this late luncheon, it was great to see family and drink good wines.
