Flight 1 - Whites (3 notes)

White
2009 Domaine Auguste Clape St. Péray France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Péray
Full yellow. Tropical fruits and a little citrus. Viscous and dull without a lot of flavor or acidity. Appalling at this price point.
White
2009 Domaine Faury St. Joseph Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Yellow. Highly aromatic, floral-almost could have been Viognier from the nose. Lighter and much more lively in the mouth than the Clape. Cinnamon and minerality in the mouth combine to make this a very interesting bottle. My favorite of the whites.
White
2009 Domaine Faury Condrieu France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
Lighter yellow. Flowers and apricot aromatics. Unfortunately, much better on the nose than the palate. Light and spicy but dilute and almost no mid-palate presence. Amazing that this is twice as expensive and not even half as good as the Saint Joseph from the same producer. Really poor value.

Flight 2 - Reds (3 notes)

Red
2009 Domaine Faury Syrah Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes
Dark. So perfumed that I wondered if some Viognier was blended in. The palate, however, is all Syrah-medium weight, tight black fruit, not all that much flavor or length. No. Looking back, I see I had exactly the same reaction to it when I first tried it 5 months ago.

Red
2009 Domaine Auguste Clape Le Vin des Amis France, Rhône, Vin de France
Big and inky appearing. Forthcoming, already complex nose of blackberry jam and a whiff of smoke. Meaty feel although it is actually middle weight. Strong blackberry fruit and prominent black olive. Fairly tannic but excellent finish. To me, this was the best of the reds, and it seems like a terrific introduction to a great Cornas producer at a very reasonable price.
Red
2007 Patrick Jasmin Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Frankly, this looks pretty advanced for a 4 year old wine with a light center and fading rim. Menthol and herbaceous profile. Light weight, earthy, good acidity but lacking in fruit. An optimist might call this elegant, but I just don't think it has enough stuffing or interest for Cote Rotie.
