Fine Wine Reserve

Tasted March 20, 2011 by Jhcwine with 679 views

Introduction

Graciously Hosted by VinToronto at Fine Wine Reserve. Dinner courses brought by attendees. A relaxed evening with approx. 14 wines consumed over 6 hours. Rhones Around the World Theme.

Other wines (for which I did not have sufficient detail to identify) included Mailly GC Champagne and Cornas 2003. The Champagnes were served with hors deuve: Oysters (VinToronto) and Pate (LC).

Tasting notes are limited, due to number of wines, and preference to enjoy great company, wine and food (rather than take notes).

Flight 1 - White Rhones (2 notes)

Served with Appetizer prepared by jhcolman: scallops sauted in clarifed butter with pernod cream sauce (with fresh fennel and chives), accompanied by hearts of palm vinegrette.

Followed by asparagus soup prepared by LC

White
2006 Domaine de Beaurenard (Paul Coulon et Fils) Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Boisrenard France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Tasted at the March 11 2011 Toronto Wine Cru Offline at Fine Wine Reserve, Toronto. Nose - obvious crispness. 90. Palette - equally crisp. 89.
White
2008 E. Guigal Condrieu La Doriane France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
Tasted at the March 11 2011 Toronto Wine Cru Offline at Fine Wine Reserve, Toronto. Not my cup of tea. Nose - Nicely floral. 91. Palette - very smokey, abit oily.

Flight 2 - Que Syrah Syrah (2 notes)

Blind Syrah Flight. Included a Cornas 2003 for which I did not have the Chateau. This was a Northern Rhone wine at I scored at 91.

Red
2005 Dunham Cellars Syrah USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
89 points
Tasted at the March 11 2011 Toronto Wine Cru Offline at Fine Wine Reserve, Toronto. Part of a 3 Syrah blind flight. Nose - 91. Palette - abit harsh. 89.
Red
2004 Elderton Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Barossa
89 points
Tasted at the March 11 2011 Toronto Wine Cru Offline at Fine Wine Reserve, Toronto. Nose - nice. Palette - full bodied and fruited, but abit plebian. But not as full bodied as other Elderton's that I have had, such as some of their cab/shiraz blends. Likely due to the age - 6 years has helped abit.

Flight 3 - Lamb Course - Flight 1 (2 notes)

Served with braised lamb shank with soft polenta and roasted garlic and chili broccoli rabe, prepared by Mangiare

Red
2007 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape A la Gloire de mon Grand-Père France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Tasted at the March 11 2011 Toronto Wine Cru Offline at Fine Wine Reserve, Toronto. I contributed this wine. Nose - on opening. not much fruit, detectable tannins. Limited fruit, overwhelming tannins. After 1.5 hours: not much change. After 3 hours: opened up abit. Some fruit on the nose, but still tannic. Palette - also some fruit but very grippy. Needs 3 years more minimum, preferably 5 years. This cannot be the same wine as tasted by the other Cellartracker members!
Red
2003 Tablas Creek Esprit de Beaucastel USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
flawed
Tasted at the March 11 2011 Toronto Wine Cru Offline at Fine Wine Reserve, Toronto. Nose - Nice. Palette - obvious pickling, effervescence. I think that this wine might be off.

Flight 4 - Lamb Course - Flight 2 (3 notes)

Red
1995 M. Chapoutier Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Bernardine France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
89 points
Tasted at the March 11 2011 Toronto Wine Cru Offline at Fine Wine Reserve, Toronto. Nose - tannins still overwhelming the fruit. Palette - needs abit of time yet. This being said, the wine faded in the glass (at a faster rate than I would have anticipated).
Red
1989 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
Tasted at the March 11 2011 Toronto Wine Cru Offline at Fine Wine Reserve, Toronto. Nose - Abit more delicate that the other wines in this flight. Palette - reasonably delicate, some complexities. The best CDP of the night. One of 2 wines of the night. However, I would not rate this wine as a 94, which is the current average rating. It was pleasant, but did leave me with that "now that's a fine wine" opinion that I associate with a 94 point wine. May be a 93, if I do not consider my other non-CDP tasting experiences.
Red
1998 Penfolds Bin 389 Australia, South Australia
91 points
Tasted at the March 11 2011 Toronto Wine Cru Offline at Fine Wine Reserve, Toronto. This was a pleasant surpise. I do not recollect whether the wine was decanted. But on first tasting - from my glass - the nose was nice and the palette was delicate, relative to what I had expected for this Aussi wine. Not as delicate as a Beaucastel CDP of equivalent age, but reasonably delicate nonetheless. And the longer the wine sat in the glass, the more it came around, developing some interesting flavours. So it started as a 90 and evolved to a 91. So this wine offers (I suspect) a decent QPR. One of two wines of the night (the other being a 1989 Beaucastel CDP).

Flight 5 - Desert course (1 note)

Desert course by VinCentric

White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Guiraud France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Tasted at the March 11 2011 Toronto Wine Cru Offline at Fine Wine Reserve, Toronto Nose - very nice, with apricot notes. Less honey than I would have expected. a 93. Palette - good but not as nice as the nose. A 92. I would put this somewhere in the middle of these two scores. Also note that the colour had evolved, from I presume a light yellow to a now dark golden yellow colour.

Flight 6 - Cheese course (1 note)

VinToronto contributed some excellent cheeses including P'Tit Basque (my favourite of the cheeses), La Sauvagine, Blackburn, Chabichou du Poitou, Le Bleu D'Elizabeth

Red - Fortified
1983 Gould Campbell Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
87 points
Tasted at the March 11 2011 Toronto Wine Cru Offline at Fine Wine Reserve, Toronto. This port was not my cup of tea. It tasted like it needed more time, but yet it is 28 years old. Tannic and somewhat harsh. Needs more time?

Flight 7 - Futronic's Wine (1 note)

Red
2006 Clonakilla Shiraz - Viognier Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District
91 points
Tasted at the March 11 2011 Toronto Wine Cru Offline at Fine Wine Reserve, Toronto. Nose - a nice nose - a 91 or 92. Palette - not bad. Full body, a fair amount of fruit. 90.

Closing

Wines of the Night in my view were the 1989 Beaucastel CdP and the 1998 Penfolds Bin 389.
