Introduction

First time attending this Pre-Auction tasting, what a great setting for this tasting. I had high hopes from looking at the list of wines to be poured.

Flight 1 (19 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Jacquesson & Fils Champagne Cuvée No. 732 France, Champagne
92 points
Nice golden color, Fine bubbles. Very fresh on the nose and palate. On the nose I get some nice bread dough, lemon and apples. Palate compliments the nose with fine creaminess. Drinking excellent now.
Rosé - Sparkling
1982 Perrier-Jouët Champagne Cuvée Fleur de Champagne Rosé France, Champagne
95 points
Wow!! What a great bottle. Fully mature rose. The color was a deep salmon turning more orangeish. Surprisingly had some nice lively bubbles. Nose was the best part of this wine. I got sherried/hazelnut/marzipan action and some lovely dough characteristics. On the palate I got hints of lemon, dough, creamy red fruits and a lovely Hazelnuttyness which echoed the nose. Nice cascade of fine bubbles danced on my palate and the finish was incredibly long and delicious.
White
1983 Château Laville Haut-Brion Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
Perfectly preserved old Graves. Nice rich golden tone. Wonderful nose on this wine. I got a little honey apple, burnt candle wax and intense petrol notes. Palate song with some minerality, again petrol notes, nice acid and great length. Drinking beautifully.
Red
1961 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
Nice wine but obviously on the decline. Brick reddish color with some browning. On the nose I got a lot of stewed fruits/tomato (kinda V8 juice like), mushrooms, damp earth (wet forest floor) and a little tobacco character that took some swirling to coax out. The palate followed the nose with the stewed tomatoes, also the alcohol came out a little here. Overall a nice wine but this bottle was on the decline.
Red
1966 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
93 points
It was a great privilege to taste this wine. Brick red in color with some hints of browning. The nose lofted from the glass as I swirled. A great mature nose with some currant along with cedar, leather and tobacco. On the palate tannins were fully resolved, acidity was holding everything in check here. Nice medium-finish.
Red
1970 Château Beychevelle France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
94 points
A wonderful mature claret. Great red color, slightly bricking at the edges. I kept going back to this wine for over an hour. The nose was transcending with a rich dark red fruits with earthy undertones and a hint of vanilla. The palate had a gorgeous fruity sweetness to it, great balance with silky tannins.
Red
1986 Château Beychevelle France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Another nice bottle of Beychevelle, I prefered the '70 to this one. A well structure delicious wine. Nice earthness with deep dark fruits. Silky tannins and a long finish.
Red
1970 Château Angélus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
flawed
After tasting the '70 Beychevelle I was looking forward to tasting this wine. Unfortunately this wine was corked. No score.
Red
1971 Château Duhart-Milon France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
90 points
Floral and vegatal nose. Very light and delicate on the palate with cherries and earth. Probably best to drink this up, I dont see this getting
Red
1978 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
Great mature St. Julien. Classic notes of leather, red currant and hints of tobacco. Tannins are fully resolved. Great length.
Red
1981 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
This wine is still-a-Rocking!! First time I tasted a wine from my birthyear. This was really great stuff, even if from an average vintage. Great flavour profile of cherries, cassis, a touch of earthyness and an interesting tea component. Light on the palate and very delicate, I don't see this wine getting any better. Drink if you got 'em.
Red
1986 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
I thought this tasted very young still. On the nose I got very distinct cigar box, hint of coffee and cassis. The palate was very velvety smooth, tannins still present. As I kept swirling to aerate the wine I kept getting more out of the wine. This might have needed a little more airtime to reveal more of what it held back. Overall a smooth, well balance wine that would benefit from some more cellar time.
Red
2000 Château La Louvière France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
90 points
Nice deep dark almost purple color. On the nose I got graphite right off the bat along with some nice cedar and mocha notes. Lots of berry fruity goodness on the palate. Elegant, with plenty of tannins present as one would expect. A nice Pessac, but nothing to go crazy over.
Red
2000 Château Larrivet-Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
91 points
Nice ruby red coloring. Nose was very open and giving. I got cassis, a great spiciness, rock/earth and some tobacco leaf. On the palate I sensed the nice weight and structure with crisp velvety tannins. Again the nose echoed the palate.
Red
2005 Château de Fonbel France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
89 points
This wine needed more time in the bottle or more air in the decanter. Nose was very tight and reclusive. Dark fruit intermixed with good amount of oak influences at this point. I got a chalkiness on the nose/palate, with dusty tannins. Overall this had the stuffings to be much better than what it was currently showing, with time/air this will get better.
Red
2003 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
Awesome nose that was almost like a mature rose champagne. Loads of berries on the nose/palate, with hints of leather, nuttiness, spices and a mocha coffee characteristics as well. This was drinking perfectly.
Red
2002 Henry's Drive Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Padthaway
90 points
Dark Garnet coloring. As with many australian cabs I get a lot of bell pepper and crack pepper on the nose/palate. There was also a lot of delicious dark berries as well. Nice wine, but nothing outstanding about it.
Red
1999 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
90 points
Classic big overly oaked Napa Cab. I got lots of vanilla, and cedar along with cassis. A good napa cab but at the price it goes for I would rather look elsewhere.
Red
1997 Stefano Farina Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
I really enjoyed this beauty of a wine. Nice garnet color. Nose of cherries, leather and hints of tobacco leaf. Great little barolo.

Closing

The wines exceeded my expectations except for one wine. All-in-all a great experience. I will be coming back to this event again in the future.
