Flight 1 (89 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. André Robert Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée de Réserve Blanc de Blancs France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Very dry and light in body as Champagne goes. Pretty.
Red
2006 Château Cap Léon Veyrin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Listrac-Médoc
The fruit shows very ripe on the nose. Narrow on the palate with a juicy quality and strong tannin. Seems like a mixed bag but probably a bit closed.
Red
2007 Château Saint-Valéry France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Woody nose with a strong potting soil presence. Narrow and showing very tight.
Red
2005 Domaine du Grand Ormeau France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Lalande de Pomerol
Classic Bordeaux profile on the nose. The palate though was in full shutdown being tight and astringent.
White
2009 Château Haut Selve Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves
Very aromatic with a strong grassy aroma. Fat fruited and not all that expressive. Might need a decant.
Red
2006 Château Haut Selve France, Bordeaux, Graves
I really liked the expressive classic nose but the palate seemed to lack some concentration and body. Strongly tannic. For earlier drinking.
Red
2008 Château Cadillac France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur
Ripely fruited with a strong cherry aroma. Very big fruit but balanced with acids. Very fruity for a Bordeaux and clearly made for a New World palate.
Red
2008 Château Cazat-Beauchene France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur
Dense fruit on the nose though not giving up much expression. Lean feeling giving up some dark berry flavors. I'm guessing this was on the low oak end of the spectrum by the lean, clean character of the palate. Probably could use a little bit more bottle time. Nice.
Red
2009 Fabien Jouves Cahors France, Southwest France, Cahors
Big dense fruit on the nose showing berries and pepper with signs of reduction. Dense fleshy fruit with juicy acids and strong tannin. A couple years in bottle will help this with the reduction and fleshy fruit though I don't think its for the long term.
Red
2010 Fabien Jouves Cahors Cote Fruite Rose France, Southwest France, Cahors
Densely fruited, concentrated for a rose. Could have used stronger acids but it was intriguing for its fruit profile.
Red
2007 Château Flotis Fronton France, Southwest France, Fronton
90% Negrette/10% Syrah. Bretty nose with a note of pepper. Dense, tannic and reductive. A strong, lovely finish. This looks to have very good potential but needs some sleep.
Rosé
2009 Château Flotis Fronton L de Flotis Rose France, Southwest France, Fronton
Bright and fresh with a very expressive character. Big yet balanced. Very nice.
Red
2009 Frédéric Lambert Côtes du Jura France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
Rotten egg, sulfury nose. Clean and light. Very juicy but lacking fruit concentration. For immediate drinking but wait for that sulfur to blow off.
Red
2009 Frédéric Lambert Côtes du Jura France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
Nose of fresh blackberries. Bright and clean palate, even with a bit of tannin. There is a late note of pepper as well. Something like a nice Beaujolais.
White
2007 Frédéric Lambert Côtes du Jura France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
Big sharp nose like a Sherry. Lean feeling with acidity that brings a strong fresh quality. Notes of nuts on the finish. Very nice though I would only recommend this to people who like Sherry, etc.
White
2003 Frédéric Lambert Côtes du Jura Vin Jaune France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
Very aromatic. Clean with juicy acids but thin, lacking some fruit character.
White
2009 Domaine de la Couperie Vin de Pays Nantais France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Vin de Pays Nantais
Sweet fruited nose. Grassy palate with a round middle leaving the finish not very defined. Suffering from 2009 or made for a new world audience or both.
White
2008 Roger Moreux Sancerre Tradition France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
Somewhat reserved but there is a nice steely and grassy quality. A nice classic Sancerre.
White - Off-dry
2008 Domaine Sylvain Gaudron Vouvray Demi-Sec France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
Ripe nose, almost like botrytis with a strong lanolin aroma. Somewhat round but the sugar is nicely integrated with the fruit.
Red
2009 Domaine Fabrice Gasnier Chinon France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
This sees no wood. Pretty, floral nose. Tight and lean showing strong acidity and light tannin. There is some reduction showing on the palate but I really liked this. Seems the 09 Chinons show a nice freshness.
Rosé
2009 Château Saint-Pierre Côtes de Provence Rosé France, Provence, Côtes de Provence
From 40% Grenache and 60% Cinsault. Brightly fruited nose. Like in expression on the palate and almost tannic suggesting maybe some extra skin contact. Decent.
Red
2009 La Bastide Saint-Dominique Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Reductive nose. Fat fruited and somewhat round. Strong tannin right now and looking for some acid.
Red
2009 La Bastide Saint-Dominique Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Secrets de Pignan France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Blackberries on the nose but only faintly. Juicy palate with lots of dark berry qualities. Not in the rustic mode but not very modern either. Better acid than the basic bottling.
White
2010 La Bastide Saint-Dominique Côtes du Rhône Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Bland with a bitter finish. Not giving up much but what is there is not inviting.
Red
2009 La Bastide Saint-Dominique Côtes du Rhône France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Nose shows reduction in the way of rubber tires. Juicy sweet-tart fruit with a good amount of tannin. Seems to be made in a drink now style.
Red
2007 Domaine de la Colline Saint-Jean Gigondas France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas
Notes of green fruit and what seems like American oak. Wondering if there is heavy stem inclusion. Lean feeling with juicy fruits and strong tannin. This needs a few years.
Red
2007 Domaine de la Colline Saint-Jean Vacqueyras France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vacqueyras
Big nose showing violets. Tannic and concentrated with the fruit showing very ripe at the finish. This also needs some bottle time though the ripeness of the fruit may be worrisome for the long term.
White
2009 Domaine Félines Jourdan Picpoul de Pinet France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Picpoul de Pinet
Spiced grassy nose. Big fruited but with a clean finish. This is different but it works for a drink today wine.
White - Fortified
N.V. Château de Laubade Floc de Gascogne France, Southwest France, Gascony, Floc de Gascogne
Smells like sake. Sweet-tart on the palate.
Red
2008 Bodegas Riojanas Rioja Puerta Vieja Crianza Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
Clean and fresh but lacking some fruit concentration. Reductive and lightly tannic with a note of menthol. For early drinking.
Red
2004 Bodegas Riojanas Rioja Viña Albina Reserva Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
Spearmint leaf on the nose. Tight but fresh in character with a strong tannic presence. Not showing the oak young Rioja usually does. This seemed to be drinking very nicely on the day though it clearly needs some time.
Red
2001 Bodegas Riojanas Rioja Monte Real Gran Reserva Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
Expressive nose showing lots of American oak character. Plenty of fruit concentration in front of copious acidity. Tight and tannic at the moment but this is a complete wine that can only get better. Another great 01 gran reserva.
Red
1998 Bodegas Riojanas Rioja Monte Real Reserva Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
Showing fairly ripe fruit but not a lot of it. Fresh and juicy while also tannic. Not a lot of concentration but seems to have aged pretty well. A drink today wine but the ripeness of the fruit is a bit distracting.
Red
1998 Bodegas Riojanas Rioja Viña Albina Gran Reserva Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
Baked fruits and American oak on the nose. Juicy and tannic but pretty wrapped up. Needs a decant and/or time.
White - Off-dry
2009 Bodegas Riojanas Rioja Viña Albina Blanco Semi Dulce Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
100% stainless steel wine making in an off-dry style. Nutty nose with ripe fat fruit on the palate. Not sure what they are after with this.
White
2009 Quinta do Cardo Síria Portugal, Beiras, Beira Interior
100% Siria. Bright nose showing lots of lime. Reminiscent of a dry Riesling from the Mosel. Lean and fresh, almost effervescent. There is also a nice stony quality. Terrific.
Red
2007 Quinta da Fronteira Douro Fronteira Portugal, Douro
Reductive nose showing signs of new oak. Strongly extracted fruit with strongly drying tannin. Feels like they pushed this a bit too hard but are clearly making a drink now wine.
White - Sparkling
2008 Raventós i Blanc Cava Reserva Brut (L'Hereu) Spain, Cava
Nose of sweet candies. Fresh and pretty nice as Cava goes.
Rosé - Sparkling
2007 Raventós i Blanc de Nit Spain, Cava
Lean. Not showing much expression or character.
White
2010 Raventós i Blanc Penedès Silencis Spain, Catalunya, Penedès
Minerally on the nose and palate. Grassy flavors. Drinks like a lean Sancerre.
White
2010 Viñedos de Ithaca Priorat Odysseus G Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Surprisingly fresh and juicy but not really much character.
Red
2008 Viñedos de Ithaca Priorat Akyles Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Ripe fruit. Not very cohesive and very tannic.
Red
2006 Viñedos de Ithaca Priorat Odysseus Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Ripe nose with notes of VA. Big, fleshy and tannic. Made for a modern palate.
Red
2009 Caluna Malbec Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo, Agrelo
Candy like nose showing sweet florals. Ripe, sweet fruit. Somewhat flabby and tannic.
Rosé
2010 Bodegas Corral Rioja Don Jacobo Rosado Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
Very lean in character yet very fruity flavored. Should be a bargain under $10.
Red
1995 Bodegas Corral Rioja Don Jacobo Gran Reserva Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
Nose pf spicy American oak. Clean strong acids make for a nice feel and give a juiciness to the fruit. This seemed to lack some definition though. Not as good as my last go around though perhaps it needs some air.
Red
2006 Bodegas Corral Rioja Don Jacobo Crianza Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
Coconut on the nose. Dense and juicy fruit. Wide open and very fresh drinking. Nice.
Red
2008 Bodegas Corral Rioja Don Jacobo Ecologico Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
Vinified in stainless and cement tanks. Clean nose showing ripe fruits but with a fresh mineral character. Juicy and clean palate with light tannin.
White
2010 Luis Pato Maria Gomes Portugal, Beiras, Vinho Regional Beiras
The nose is bright and sweetly grapey. Expressive and spicy, aromatic. Somewhat like Muscat. Very nice.
White
2010 Trajarinho Vinho Verde Portugal, Minho, Vinho Verde
Spicy and pretty. Effervescent of course and very clean. Could use a bit more expression but its still pretty nice on the low end.
White
2009 Adega de Monção Vinho Verde Muralhas de Monção Portugal, Minho, Vinho Verde
Fatter and heavier fruit on the nose than most Vinho Verdes. Dense fruit but still fresh and light feeling. It almost seems like the fruit concentration is too high for the sort of wine but I wouldn't call it heavy.
Rosé
2010 Adega de Monção Vinho Verde Rosé Muralhas de Monção Portugal, Minho, Vinho Verde
Reserved nose. Big midpalate showing watermelon fruit. Sweet-tart expression. Made for a nice package.
White
2010 Quinta de Soalheiro Alvarinho Soalheiro Portugal, Minho, Vinho Verde
The nose is fresh with a lightly spicy character. Very clean and reserved yet expressive on the finish. Very nice.
Red
2008 Cabriz Dão Reserva Portugal, Beiras, Dão
Pretty nose with some secondary notes of wet bricks. Fleshy with potting soil notes. Strong fresh acidity. Nice.
Red
2008 Sogevinus Douro Veedha Portugal, Douro
Big berry fruited nose. Round with fresh, sweet fruits. Tannic but weak in the midpalate. A fruit driven wine, clearly.
Red
2008 Paulo Laureano Vinho Regional Alentejano Singularis Portugal, Alentejano, Vinho Regional Alentejano
Round nose of cherries. There is an odd funk here I thought might be TCA though my friend didn't. Tannins come on late.
Red
2008 Granadeiro Reguengos Tapada do Barão Portugal, Alentejano, Alentejo, Reguengos
Nose of big berried framboise. Big sweet berried palate. Juicy but could use some more acids to balance all the fruit.
White
2008 Granadeiro Reguengos Tapada do Barão Portugal, Alentejano, Alentejo, Reguengos
A blend of Antao Vaz/Verdelho/Viognier/Arinta. Light oxidation on the nose. Very clean palate with nice secondary characters and a bit of a grip.
Red
2007 Granadeiro Reguengos Tapada do Barão Reserva Portugal, Alentejano, Alentejo, Reguengos
Spends 12 months in new French oak. Forward nose of stewed fruits. The palate says all it has to say up front. Lacks concentration.
White
2010 Urbanite Cellars Caliberico USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi
Nicely aromatic. Complex yet not fruity enough and lacking some acid. Interesting.

Red
2004 Bodega Viña Mambrilla Ribera del Duero Alidis Reserva Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
Nose smells of spiced American oak though I thought that wasn't used as much in the Duero. Fleshy and dense. Very tannic and tight right now. This needs plenty of time.
White

Red

Very expressive, especially up front but a bit thin at the finish. There is also some bitterness lending me to think there is some extended skin contact.
