Introduction

For May, Chablis was selected as the theme and we had another great lineup of wine to try. This was a region that I've wanted to explore more, so I was very excited to be able to attend this month's event. The wines totally lived up to my expectations, and I really look forward to following up with some of these producers to see if I can find other tasty bottles that come in below my "special occasion" price range. Thanks to everyone for their excellent contributions and company!

Flight 1 (10 notes)

2008 Joseph Drouhin / Drouhin-Vaudon Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Fresh orange scents show with light herbs and white frosting on the nose. It's zippy and round on the palate with some interesting mineral notes. A touch of lemon shows as well as some round oak underneath good apple flavors. There's a feeling of clarity on the finish, with gentle acidity running long. 90-

2003 Verget Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

The nose here distinctly reminds me of butterscotch, lemon peels, and soda water. Some slow lemonade flavors roll onto the palate backed by oak driven hazelnut notes. The acidity lingers long, and the lemons stick around through the experience. Some faint butterscotch hides in the background, and a bit of oak wood appears as well.

2004 Domaine Corinne et Jean Pierre Grossot Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

The nose reminds me fully of an apple pastry on a plate, with the fruit and spices mingling with the flaky fresh bread. I get a hint of capers on the nose as well. Clear mineral flavors mix with light apples right away on the palate. Full flavors show themselves only well into the finish, which is always an interesting experience. Very gentle oak shows itself on the finish along with great green apples and a touch of lemon. As the flavors fade out, a full drying sensation lasts long.

2008 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis 1er Cru Vaillon France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
90 points
The nose reminds me of a chicken pot pie, with flaky crust scents mixing with herbed chicken, some lemon zest, and a creamy sauce. Lemon fruit and peels show with full acid on the teeth. Zesty green apples are zippy, and the sensation really wakes you up! The crust from the nose makes a faint appearance behind the fruit, while a touch of something floral hovers above it all. 90+

2005 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

The nose shows yellow flowers and lemons backed by some funky oak and something like the casing you peel off of a slice of pepperoni. Limes and apples deliver immediately on contact with the palate. Clean mineral notes show on the mid palate. Then some richness shows as gentle oak blooms early on the finish. After this rich texture, the acidity rolls out very slowly on the sides first, and then across the middle of the tongue. After all of this, lovely apple fruit blooms on the palate! The evolution of flavor on the finish here is amazing, and it's even more exciting after the fairly austere and structure driven entry! It ends up being juicy, with a touch of richness persisting through the experience. The evolution and flavors are captivating and it makes me think about every taste!

2007 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

The nose reminds me of a lunch break on a nice hike. Scents of Douglas Fir trees, with needles and bark intact, blend with mineral notes like a the wet rocks in a nearby stream bed. The lunch consists of a cured meat sandwich, with savory and bread scents mixing nicely with scents of peaches. When tasted, lemon flavors show immediately, and they linger gently above everything for the full experience of the wine. Gorgeous Braeburn apples are full and rich on the palate, blooming and fading elegantly. The oak is slow to evolve, and it never even eclipses the apple flavors, let alone the lemons. All of the fruit runs way out on the finish, and the acidic blanket of lemon flavors sticks around late to dry things out fully, leaving a crisp sensation in the mouth after each taste. Exceptional!

2005 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
88 points
The nose is interesting here, with scents of cucumber mixing with raspberry vines and green apples. Some bread crust scents show through as well. It has a gentle touch on the palate, with full acidity coming in later. Lemons and limes are gentle on the palate, and some apple flavors show on the finish. It's very dry and has some spritz to it while the acidity becomes ripping on the finish. 88+

1998 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

The nose is like a lovely snack made of saltine crackers topped with smoked trout and mushrooms with a bit of lime squeezed over the top. It's inviting! Lovely lemons and barely ripe apples dance on the palate and the acidity is full and long lasting. A hint of butterscotch shows up late, and it slowly rises to become the dominant flavor on the finish without becoming overly rich. A bit of aged character shows on the palate, but it's still quite lively.

I love the nose here. It's full and complex showing scents of apricots and green apple backed by hints of juniper and spicy gum drops. Surprisingly, the gum drops roll out on to the palate right away with lots of sweet and spicy character. A hint of eucalyptus makes a play, backed by limes and nice minerality. The acidity is slow to build, but it's powerful once it builds up, and the juniper from the nose makes a ghostly appearance in the background near the finish.

2008 Dauvissat-Camus Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Honeysuckle flowers, mandarin oranges, and a hint of honey all show themselves on the nose. Gentle honey flavors mix with apples quickly on the palate, while the oranges from the nose show up in the middle. Both mineral notes and the oranges sit gently on the tongue through the finish, and the fruit has a feeling of fullness that stands out among the other Chablis tasted in this lineup. That sensation, and the enjoyable flavors make this pretty compelling.
