SWINE Whites Blind Dinner

At our quarterly SWINE blind tasting and dinner we decided to go off the regular format of blind tasting a particular regional varietal and instead went with a format that each couple would bring a favorite white wine. Except for Tom & Karen, everyone played it safe and brought a California Chardonnay.

We also decided to dispense with the formal note taking sheets and #2 pencils in favor of a more fitting method, Crayola Crayons on the table top.

Flight 1 - Gathering (1 note)

We gathered with the 2008 Trimbach Reisling with hors d'ouevrs of spicy olives, tomato basil goat cheese spread, and roasted red bell pepper humus.

2008 Trimbach Riesling France, Alsace
88 points
Gathering wine served at the SWINE Whites Blind Dinner. Consistently clean, crisp and a great aperitif.

Flight 2 - Tasting (4 notes)

2006 Kistler Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
93 points
This wine placed 1st in the SWINE White Blind Dinner. The experts noted hits of S'mores, a chemical scent, wet dog and Snausage. Once again we demonstrate our lack of wine knowledge doesn't prevent us from having a really good time.
2009 Maison Albert Bichot Chablis Domaine Long-Depaquit France, Burgundy, Chablis
92 points
This wine placed 2nd in the SWINE Whites Blind Dinner. The experts were able to tell that this wine was not a California Chardonnay, one decidely bold critic went so far as to guess it as a French Chablis or Sancere, again proving the discriminating taste of this group. Other notes detected were thinner chocolate, clean, smooth, dry.
2009 Trefethen Chardonnay USA, California, Napa Valley, Oak Knoll District
90 points
This wine placed 3rd in the SWINE Whites Blind Dinner tasting. Tasting notes for this wine are a little cryptic, it had a velvet mouthfeel.
2007 Pahlmeyer Chardonnay Jayson USA, California, North Coast
91 points
This wine placed 4th in the SWINE Whites Blind Dinner. The experts noted it as a classic California Chardonnay, buttery but not overoaked with hints of carmel

Flight 3 - Dining (2 notes)

Brenda prepared a wonderfull dinner of:
Caprese Salad
Platter of roasted shellfish (lobster, king crab, shrimp and scallops) with secret butter sauce
Asparagus with secret butter sauce
Herb quinoa pilaf
Strawberry and white choclolate mouse tart

2008 Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
90 points
This was the dinner wine served at the SWINE Whites Blind Dinner. RSR is a flinty wine with pear and citrus notes.
2008 DuMOL Chardonnay Isobel USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
91 points
Served after dinner at SWINE Whites Blind Dinner. Subdued yellow fruit notes, a delicious wine.
