Introduction

Once again, JC and FKG hosted another dinner at their lovely home to welcome mareff from NYC. A great guy that I had the opportunity to dine with twice and good to see the group again after going since May without an offline. Superb menu by FKG and a very nice group of wines to enjoy it with. Another fun evening with a great bunch of people.

Flight 1 - Whites & Dessert (3 notes)

White - Off-dry
2008 Domaine Huet Vouvray Demi-Sec Le Mont France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
92 points
Creamy, rich slightly sweet wine featuring apple, pear, and peach fruit, but with a nice lift from the acidity that made for a nice balance. Really enjoyed this.
White - Off-dry
2001 Selbach-Oster Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
91 points
Featured mostly apple fruit in a fairly straightforward way with a medium level of acidity. No petrol notes, but some minerality on the finish. Less sweet than many Spatlese.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Château Guiraud France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
91 points
A little less sweet than other vintages of this I have had and lighter bodied and less intense. Very young at this point, and I think needs more age to show better. Drink your 01's and 03's (particularly) while waiting on this one.

Flight 2 - Reds (11 notes)

Red
1989 Château Pavie Macquin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
92 points
Elegant, somewhat reserved fruit of dark cherry and currant. Only a hint of earth on the medium body frame with medium acidity. Long finish that has nice complexity and layers.
Red
2009 Jacques Puffeney Pinot Noir Arbois France, Jura, Arbois
87 points
This did not come across as pinot to me (especially French), more so a light fruity Spanish rhone blend or a Beaujolais. Fruit forward, light body, medium acidity, mostly red fruit. A unique style that may appeal to some, but not one I found endearing.
Red
1998 Podere Rocche dei Manzoni Barolo Vigna Cappella di Santo Stefano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Some bricking at the rim, a wonderful floral nose, with plenty of slightly tart cherry fruit that has a hint of sweetness on the long, complex finish. In a very good place right now that needs little decanting.

2004 Mauro Sebaste Barolo Monvigliero Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Was very tight when first tasted, but came back to it at the end of the evening (after 2+ hours of decanting) and it was drinking wonderfully. Dark cherry fruit, medium to high acidity and medium body that was nicely balanced after softening the tannins with decanting. A floral nose and finish that was very enjoyable. Excellent wine.
Red
2006 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Koplen Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
90 points
A liitle funk on the nose and the more reserved fruit (for KB) make this more pinot like for me, but is still made in a big, riper style that I do not favor.
Red
2003 Château d'Aiguilhe France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux
89 points
Riper, fuller fruit than most Bordeaux typical of the 03 vintage with little earth. Got a little heat and sourness on the finish that lowered the score a bit. I have some of this and recall liking a little better at release.
Red
2006 Mas Martinet Priorat Clos Martinet Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
93 points
Rich, thick texture, but still nimble on the palate with some nice earth on the finish. Not unlike a young powerful, but resolved, Bordeaux. Currant and blackberry fruit, full body with medium acidity. A very well balanced, but powerful wine that I really enjoyed.
Red
2007 Tenuta Sette Ponti Oreno Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
92 points
Red fruit, bright acidity and still a bit young, but drank very well after getting an hour of air. Very nice Super Tuscan.
Red
2004 Achával-Ferrer Quimera Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo
92 points
Only got a small sip thanks to JC and emilio sucking it down :-), but got some oak on the nose, with blackberry and currant fruit, on a medium to full body frame, and medium acidity. Was drinking very nicely later in the evening as it was tight when I tried a small sip when it was first passed around
Red
2007 Hourglass Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
I expected to like this more than I did. Red fruit driven, not as ripe or as big as expected, in a more reserved style. Very approachable as the tannins were smooth for being so young, not unusual for an 07 Napa cab. Just didn't have the panache and lushness I have come to expect from high end CA cab. Perhaps it has entered a dumb phase. I liked a 06 O'Shaughnessy Howell Mtn cab much better than this that I had two days before.
Red
2003 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva Chile, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto
An herbal, eucalyptus note at the entry of this wine did not hit me well and was tough for me to warm up to this wine. Blackberry, currant, and plum fruit with a candied cherry finish. Full body and medium acidity. Certainly technically well made, just has a flavor profile that does not agree with me.
