Introduction

WIth me focusing a little more on California this year, I thought that the timing would be splendid to indulge in the exuberant tendencies that these wines possess.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

Starting with the '04 and ending with the '07.

Red
2004 Lewis Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Decanted for one hour. A very dark garnet, with a slight sanguine rim. A lot of oak and a little jammy, however, still an egalitarian aspect on the medium finish. Very full-bodied, showing spice, black cherry, coffee liquor and tar - both aromatically and on the palate. Some acidity to help with the jammy qualities and warranted complexity. Drink now - 2015.
Red
2005 Lewis Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Decanted for an hour and a half. Dark, almost black with a lighter rim. Vanilla, roasted fruit, spice, sage, leather and dark berries. A little too much heat and jam on the palate to be outstanding, however, still enjoyable. Medium finish and velvety tannins. Drink now - 2013.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

These wines really stood out.

Red
2006 Lewis Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Decanted for two hours, utilizing a funnel. Bleakly black and a ruby rim. Very long and seductive, with a charming nut meg element, also showing cassis, sage, coffee, currant and blueberry. Seamless and profound tannins, with more poignancy than the '04 or '05. Covers all of your palate with a Napa essence. Still could use another year and should last for another ten - fifteen. Drink 2012 - 2023.
Red
2007 Lewis Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
95 points
Decanted for two hours, twice. A dark pool of garnet. Aromas of blackberry, raw meat, asian spice, cassis, graphite and cherry pie. The palate really expresses so many layers and a log finish of spice and berry. This is the best Lewis Reserve I have ever had along with possibly the most elegant. Full-throttle and lithe while showing polished and fine tannins. Hard to not drink now and there's enough structure that shows the ability to truly age. What a beguiling delight. Drink now - 2022.

Closing

The 2007 was truly classic. I love the fact that it had a fine balance and was more tamed than some of the older vintages. The 2005 was a very good wine, just showing me the side of Napa that I'm not always as drawn to. Something about over-charged wines that I don't typically care for as much. The 2004 was deep and rich with some wonderful qualities, however, it is not for the dainty. The 2006 was mine, along with my wife's second favorite. The 2007 was unanimously the leader and gorgeous!
