Lincoln Park Binnys Tasting Room

Introduction

Outstanding wine event with the pretty Elisa Scavino, who walked us through her family's outstanding barolo portfolio. These wines are really something. Complex and powerful, and so young at this stage. The Cannubi, Bric del Fiasc and Rocche were all in a different league. Outstanding wines.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2010 Paolo Scavino Langhe Bianco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
89 points
Golden color, almost toffee gold. On the nose, it has a nutty, almond-like toasty note. Citrus fruit and a hint of greenness. Lots of acidity. Some mid-floral notes. Elisa told us that there is 70% sauv blanc and 30% chardonnay in the blend. It has a toasty richness but has plenty of acidity to counteract. An interesting and unique wine.
Red
2008 Paolo Scavino Langhe Nebbiolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
89 points
Bright youthful cherry fruit that is pure. Lots of youthful violet and some light perfume. Sone cinnamon. Medium plus intensity of nose, medium to medium plus finish with lots of acidity and freshness. Some back end greenness. Pure youthful expression of nebbiolo but with some nice complexity to balance the clean fruit.
Red
2006 Paolo Scavino Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
Nice wine. Medium to deep cherry hues, some deep refined spices, a rose soapiness and some delicate earth aromas. A little perfume. Med plus finish.
Red
2006 Paolo Scavino Barolo Cannubi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Deep cherry fruit, some perfume. Beautiful aromas of rose. Anise and licorice too. Even an exotic truffle component. On the palate, there is some refined white pepperiness. Truffle and spice complexity carry through. Medium bodied, refined tannins and plenty of structure. Outstanding wine.
Red
2006 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
95 points
Black cherry fruit on the nose. Austere. Masculine nose and palate. Earth, intense concentrated perfume and lots of tar. Complex in a strong, structured and firm manner. Very young at this stage. This wine should not be opened until at least five years from now. An austere, muscular wine but very potent and complex.

2004 Paolo Scavino Barolo Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

What a powerful yet modern sophisticated wine. Dark concentrated fruits. Very black cherry and some currant. Balsamic in nature. Concentrated and ripe fruit. Oak flavors. Full tannins. Earth and tar. Complex but very tightly wound aromas on the nose and palate. Minute plus finish that reveals tightly hidden hints of some of the most complex notes that I have ever experienced. Needless to say, this wine is not nearly ready. And yet, the potent tannins have a velvet sheen around them. But it will need some serious time to unwind those very complex aromas. Outstanding.
