TNs: PapaPietro Perry Visit

Tasted October 8, 2011 by AllRed with 395 views

Introduction

PapaPietro Perry's tasting room is located near the Family Wineries of Dry Creek collective, so this is a good spot to taste a lot of different wines. The tasting room was busy, almost too much, as the gentleman who began pouring for us forgot about us a couple of times, though other staff members picked up the slack. Still, a decent visit with some very nice Pinots. $10/person tasting fee.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

Bright ruby color. Notes of cherry, baking spices- nutmeg and cinnamon. Cherry and red fruit flavors with nice underlying acidity and a lingering cherry finish. Balanced.

Red
2008 Papapietro Perry Pinot Noir Leras Family Vineyards USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
92 points
Ruby/crimson color. Aromas of cherry cola, strawberry and florals with an earthy/mushroomy undertone. Medium- to full-bodied, with bright acidity and flavors of cherries, cinnamon and cola. 92-93 pts.
Red
2008 Papapietro Perry Zinfandel Elsbree Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
74 points
Garnet color. Smells of sweat socks. The palate is better, with red currants and spice, but there's a "dirty" quality there. I thought perhaps this was flawed, so I asked if this was a representative bottle. I was told "yes" which was all I needed to hear, and to further prove the point, a second bottle was opened despite my insistence that it was unneccesary. The second bottle showed just as the first- sweaty/moldy aromas and dirty red fruit.
