Introduction

A lot of wines in a short amount of time, can take its effect on notes and perceptions. I would have loved to been able to mull each glass over for a decent period of time, but alas that is not the nature of the beast here. It is a thoroughly enjoyable event, but is conducted at breakneck speed, and even then I missed about 30% of the wines on show. Still, my notes reflect my thoughts at the time and it is rare that you can ever get the opportunity to taste this many wines alongside each other.

Thanks to Bibendum once more for a great event!

Flight 1 - Rouge (36 notes)

These are not noted in order, as the session was fairly hap hazard.

Red
2010 Château Gloria France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Power, fruit, velvet, great structure and pretty much on the money. Super refreshing. Everything seems in abundance and balance. Acidity and tannins really prop this up. Top notch stuff and certainly worth an audition. 91-93
Red
2007 Château Gloria France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
90 points
Nice vegetal nose, good depth and interesting. Tinge of green pepper, and mushroom. Palate is pleasing, finish is a little short and doesn't have all the complexity of other vintages. Approachable right now. Good for mid to short term cellaring.
Red
2010 Château Talbot France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
91 points
Good nose, ripe tannins, freshness and vigour. Attractive wine. Not as big as others, but quite classy and elegant. 90 - 92
Red
2010 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
91 points
Nice nose, hints of smoke and blackcurrant leaf. Good structure, nice balance. Not over the top like some. Good show
Red
2010 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Sweet fruits, nice attack, elegant, but with a good backbone. Bruno Eynard was a real gentleman, and his wine reflects his manner. Good effort and if pricing is good - which i'm told is around 2009 levels, then will be on the cellar list.
Red
2004 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
90 points
Nice nose, secondary flavours coming through. Leather, underbrush, earthy. Is light, lifted, refreshing and moreish. Imagine this with your Sunday Roast. Good effort and good value. 90+
Red
2010 Château Léoville Poyferré France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
95 points
Wow! This is a big boy. Mr Rolland consults here and this is certainly in his style. Huge nose, plump ripe tannins and bags of acidity, point towards a long future. This wine is certainly going places. One of my favourites of the tasting. Quality stuff, but I anticipate a hefty price tag.
94-96+

2002 Clos du Marquis France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

No notes for this wine.
Red
2007 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
No 2010 left when I arrived, however the 2007 was also on show. Sturdy stuff, with a nice nose of pencil lead and tobacco leaf. Good harmony with the structure. Classy, in an indifferent vintage.

2007 Château Nenin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

No 2010 on show. 2007 was drinking nicely, although I felt it a little thin, and lacking finish.
Red
2004 Château Potensac France, Bordeaux, Médoc
90 points
Another producer not showing a 2010, however this 2004 was drinking perfectly. Remnants of fruit, mineral, earthy, Smooth, silky, nice balance and finesse. What more could you ask for. Bargain. 90+
Red
2010 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Good backbone, pretty hard and tough at present. True to form for this estate. Certainly a long ager, with dry tannins and good potential. Nice freshness and length.
Red
2007 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
89 points
Good nose, violets, cassis, slight mustyness, (however not off putting and I actually like this) Love the way that this is so approachable. Starting to get into the green hints of this vintage and does have its own unique appeal. Not going to last a long time, but hey why wait. Pick up a young early drinking bargain. 89+

2004 Château Langoa Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Nice colour, starting to pale slightly. Spice, herb, tobacco nose. Good attack and very satisfying. Still with plenty of years left, as tannins still prominent, but equally delicious.
Red
2010 Château Clerc Milon France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
Nice fruit, good concentration, elegance, not overblown, svelte style. Freshness, medium body 91-93.
Red
2010 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
Nicely impressed. Pretty, prominent nose, blackcurrant cassis, velvety. Good future. 92-94. Good price?
Red
1998 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
Didnt get too long to taste this, but it was certainly a great bit of mature Bordeaux. Drinking beautifully, with no hard edges and great Pauillac expression. Good value.
Red
2008 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
Black fruit, minerals, earth, nice oak tones - cedar, still some evolving to do. Not quite approachable at present for my palate.
Red
2007 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
89 points
Interesting nose, spring day after rain. Again approachable, and enjoyable if you like this style. Not a rich, full blown style, doesnt have legs for the future, BUT if wine is all about pleasure, and if you cant wait for the 2005, 06, 09s then try this vintage. Nice complexity and a good intro into the style.

2007 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

The nose is certainly green tinged, with bell pepper, and tons of complexity, but a lot going on. Really interesting and I cant get enough of this at all. Fortunately (for us) this wine is approachable now and the palate is bringing home the bacon - or should that be roast dinner, because this wine really delivers, and if sitting in the middle of your table come the day of the sabbath, you will be very pleased. Very meaty, fuller than others, with that vegetal element adding a bit of left field. Finish is a bit shorter than you would expect from this great estate, but certainly worth an audition.

If the 07 has all the ingredients in place, but lacks a little in the back end and maybe has toned down the power a bit, well this 2010 edition has taken all the steroids and been on the protein shakes. You are struck with an abundance of power leaping out of the glass. Tremendous concentration and depth on the nose. This is backed up by pretty monstrous tannins and supporting acidity. I think this may have a long future...should be a great wine for the collectors. 94-96+

2010 Château Haut-Bailly France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Another huge wine. The nose is incredible, in fact I am reminded of young port with added freshness and violets. This is quite incredible. Ably supported by stocky tannins and bracing acidity, as per vintage, this is another for the long haul. A real cracker, and an estate that keeps pushing the quality upwards. 95-97+

A lot of the producers are showing their 2007s today. Probably to remind us what we are missing, and this is no exception. The green edges are noticable again, but this wine is drinking just nicely right now, and has a good medium finish. Not as complex as say the montrose, but still a nice wine in my mind.

2010 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Doesnt have the power of some of its neighbours such as Haut Bailly, however this wine really delivers on elegance. That said this is a notch up from previous DC that I have had in the past. This wine has turned up the concentration and certainly has a bit more going on. Great nose, full of the creamy strawberries that are very appealing. Nice structure and will bring plenty of pleasure to those that invest the time and cash. 93-95

2010 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Another impressive wine in St Emilion. A bit more showy, has a good dose of the concentration being dished out in this vintage. Incredibly pure, maybe a tad extracted - Perhaps, but either way this is pretty good wine 92-94
Red
2010 Château Angélus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Abundance in power, large proportions, long finish .Going to be one of the greats for this chateau. 93-96

No note for this wine. Just a score in comparison to its monster brother in 2010. A tough act to follow for any wine

2010 Château Pavie Macquin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
96 points
Well what can I say. In a tasting of large wines, where there is a lot of Alpha maledom going around, I think the PM has really stomped on a lot of them. This is big, bold winemaking. All the ingredients are there, and there is so much of everything. I think it is balanced, but its hard to tell, due to the intensity and levels that this wine is hitting. Not playing the elegant card at all, I will be curious to see how this turns out in the future. Cyrille says this will be 15%, but his wry smile as I took my sample revealed a lot more. They are proud of this wine at Chateau Pavie Macquin, and rightly so, just dont plan for a quiet evening in. This wine is as outrageous and packs more punch than a sledgehammer called Lady Gaga wearing boxing gloves and a red meat dress.

Plenty of red fruits and blueberry on the nose. good power and structure. Nice lifted fruit keeps the balance with the acidity and tannins in check. V good 92-94

2010 Château Feytit Clinet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Havig missed the 2009 en primeur campaign, but managing to get around a lot of 2008 at this time, I am completely amazed by the difference in power, acidity and tannic quality in this vintage. The feytit clinet is another that is jumping out of the glass. Full power, tones of bite, and lovely fruit. Can't ask for much more really...91-93

2010 Château Rouget France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Lovely nose, all creamy, cedar, blackfruits and depth. Another notch up from the 2008 alongside it. Could be big value option? 92-94

2010 Château Petit Village France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Strawberry and red fruits, full of power, but seems controlled and slightly reigned back, which certainly makes it stand out from its peers here. Plenty of big structures in the glass, and another that is performing at the top of its game. Can they keep the price real? Lets hope so. 92-94

2010 Château Gazin Pomerol France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Lovely nose, quite heady and rich. Silky mouthfeel and tannins are completely hiding somewhere..a bit of the Lord Lucan about this wine. V good 92-94

Bags of flavour, as is the case with many of the 07s out today. Nice acidity, but hindered by a shortish finish. Still worth picking up if reasonable..

2010 Château La Conseillante France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

I knew that this wine would be vying with the alpha dogs to stake its claim at the top of the vintage podium. It really doesnt disappoint, with bags of power, however with a certain finesse and contradictory lightness in the palate. This wine really does dance in your mouth. Not so much a beefcake, more svelte, accurate and with targeted power - more SAS than Navy seal. 94-96+

Lifted, racy, herb notes, gorgeous texture, that skips around your mouth, extremely fresh and energeitc. Has that silky quality that always shines through at this estate. Great effort in this vintage. Really used what they had well to create a lot of interest. A success - and very, very drinkable now.

Flight 2 - Blanc (including Sauternes) (6 notes)

Hidden away at the top of the room, the chilled Sauternes provided a welcome rest from the tannic assault.

White
2010 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
92 points
Abundance of grapefruit, creaminess and minerality. This is really good, and has a serene balance, that says good things for this wines future.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Château Climens France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
93 points
Seville Oranges, zest and great lift and creamy freshness. Really long finish, exceptionally smooth, and the epitome of moreish. Great example of Sauternes doing its thing. 93+ and will surely improve
White - Sweet/Dessert
2010 Château Sigalas Rabaud France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Honeyed almost candied nose ,slightly heavier than others here, however still plenty going on in the glass. Maybe a touch less acidity than would be perfect, but a small gripe really.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2010 Château Doisy-Védrines France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Full, round and with nice supporting acidity. All the honey from the hive is here, together with citrus and orange zest. Very tasty juice, and pretty concentrated too. A great value option. 91-93+
White - Sweet/Dessert
2004 Château Doisy-Védrines France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
90 points
Good fruit, plenty of sweetness, acidity, however overshadowed a little by its peers all around. Still good stuff and worth a sip or three.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2007 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Honey, depth of fruit, good acidity, medium length, very light and super silky. Quite refreshing. GV in the context of the latest offerings.
