Introduction

Tasting of mainstream Cava from houses Freixenet and Cordorniu, with a few smaller producers thrown in for reference. Wines were served well chilled in keeping with tradition (about 6 degrees centigrades). Not blind.

Flight 1 (18 notes)

Oh well. Grapefruit, earthy tones. Short.

2005 Segura Viudas Cava Brut Reserva Spain, Cava
82 points
Red apples, earthy mineral tones. So-so.
White - Sparkling
2006 Segura Viudas Cava Lavit Brut Nature Spain, Cava
84 points
Clean, focussed. Not bad in its old-fashioned way.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Segura Viudas Cava Brut Reserva Heredad Spain, Cava
88 points
Keeps its cards very close to the chest. Yes, the quality is there, but it remains a bit four-square, tight. Could do with some added fruit and perfume.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Freixenet Cava Cordón Negro Brut Spain, Cava
83 points
Earthy, some fruit, decent length. Not bad in its category but it doesn't really rock the boat. Go for the Extra Dry

N.V. Freixenet Cava Cordón Negro Extra Dry Spain, Cava
85 points
The extra dosage works miracles. More balanced, charming even. Excellent value.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Freixenet Cava Brut Barroco Reserva Spain, Cava
87 points
It's not bad but slightly nondescript. One of those wines where everything is correct yet the whole is not greater than the sum of the parts.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Bodegas Muga Cava Conde de Haro Spain, Cava
87 points
Fleshy, broad, but lacking core. Not convinced about the style. If I wanted internationally styled sparkling wine I would go to Green Point and pay far less. Parker et al are wrong, but what do they know about Cava… 87 on quality but very low score on value.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Codorníu Cava Selección Raventós Brut Spain, Cava
83 points
Slightly off balance--- you get some of the off flavors of Macabeo but no compensation. Earthy and a bit mean.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Codorníu Cava Brut Anna de Codorníu Spain, Cava
85 points
Biscuity, decent length. Not terribly interesting but correct. I remain unconvinced about Chardonnay in Cava.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Codorníu Cava Gran Plus Ultra Brut Nature Reserva Spain, Cava
86 points
Nutty, buscuity, mineral. Short on fruit / charm. Again--- why Chardonnay?
White - Sparkling
N.V. Codorníu Cava Non Plus Ultra - Cuvée Reina Cristina Spain, Cava
87 points
This is better from Cordoniu. Very dry but pure fruit shines through.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Codorníu Cava Pinot Noir Rosado Spain, Cava
87 points
Fuller stuff, not subtle, but manages to retain interest. Clean fruit, albeit pronounced, fat. Long. Would pair with food.
White - Sparkling
2008 Codorníu Cava Reina Maria Brut Spain, Cava
86 points
Floral, delicate. Not sure…makes you work very hard for the money.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Raimat Cava Brut Nature Spain, Cava
83 points
Nope, doesn't do it for me. Candy store fruit aromas. One-dimensional, fluffy. Another misguided effort with PN/Chard.
White - Sparkling
2007 Agustí Torelló Mata Cava OC Brut Nature Reserva Barrica Spain, Cava
90 points
Great stuff. Serious competition to Champagne for the money. Very fruity for a Cava but remains essentially balanced and true to type.

2006 Agustí Torelló Mata Cava Kripta Brut Nature Gran Reserva Spain, Cava
92 points
I can just about tolerate the bottle design because the content is so good. Long and complex. Refined. A lot of things going on yet very pure in every aspect. Outstanding
White - Sparkling
2005 Juvé y Camps Cava Brut Nature Reserva de la Familia Gran Reserva Spain, Cava
89 points
I'm biased but this is what Cava is all about. Bone dry but very complex, long, perfumed. Tell-tale petroleum on the nose. Great value.
