Introduction

Jura tasting organised by Sommeliers Australia at Quay Restaurant. Four flights to show the styles of wines that come out of Jura.

Flight 1 - Sparkling et al - lighter styled whites (4 notes)

White - Sparkling
1996 Marcel Cabelier Crémant du Jura France, Jura, Crémant du Jura
Nose: Cork(?), lemon, yeast, green apple, mousse
Mouth: Medium plus acid, tart green apple and lemon biscuit. Medium long.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Philippe Bornard Poulsard Vin de Table Français Tant-mieux France, Vin de Table Français
Colour: Pink/golden highlights (rose)
Nose: Red currant, smoke/toast, rose, cream soda/candy floss
Mouth: Candy floss and red fruit, medium minus acid, lees, medium length.
White
2009 Domaine Belluard Gringet Vin de Savoie Le Feu France, Savoie, Vin de Savoie
Colour: Lemon moving to gold
Nose: Herbaceous - almost wormwood/dusty and floral, paint thinner, green leaf. Also minerality
Mouth: Greengages, green fruit, gooseberries, medium acid. Tight.
White
2007 Philippe Bornard L'Ivresse de Noé France, Vin de France
Colour: Gold
Nose: Sherry aromas, apple, dried fruit, slight volatile acidity, kernal, creamed nut
Mouth: Green crisp fruit, medium acid. Dry, complex, long finish.

Flight 2 - More structured whites (4 notes)

2007 Philippe Bornard Chardonnay Arbois Pupillin Le Blanc de la Rouge France, Jura, Arbois Pupillin
Colour: Medium intensity lemon
Nose: Volatile acidity, nut, orchard fruit, spice and mineral. Very slight cedar and cork.
Mouth: Spice, medium acid, apple and some citrus. short finish
White
2008 Emmanuel Houillon (Maison Pierre Overnoy) Chardonnay Arbois Pupillin France, Jura, Arbois Pupillin
Colour: Lemon green, medium intensity, clear
Nose: Volatile acidity, kernal, orchard, slight stone/slate. Some cream
Mouth: Medium acid, spice, apple, medium finish. Bit dull.
White
2009 Tissot (Bénédicte et Stéphane / André et Mireille) Arbois Les Bruyères France, Jura, Arbois
Colour: Lemon green - bright
Nose: Oak! Spice, cream, lees (?) dominates over stone fruit and orchard fruit, some minerality
Mouth: white pepper, apple fruit, oak and cream.

1986 Jean Bourdy Savagnin Côtes du Jura France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
Colour: Amber
Nose: Cream, honey, slight orchard fruit, bread - doughy and toasty.
Mouth: Aldehyde, dry, white pepper, medium plus acid. Oxidised. A little tired.

Flight 3 - Reds and a residual sugar white (4 notes)

Colour: Ruby
Nose: Red fruit, candy floss, slight leather and spice. Cream
Mouth: slight white pepper, medium minus tannin and acid. Medium finish. Red currant, plum/cherry fruit.
Nice.

2009 Jean-François Ganevat Côtes du Jura Cuvée Julien France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
Colour: Ruby
Nose: slight brett and farmyard funk. Red currant, meaty and mineral.
Mouth: Red fruit, spice, medium tannin and acid. Dry white pepper. Long finish.

2008 Jacques Puffeney Trousseau Arbois France, Jura, Arbois
Colour: Ruby
Nose: Red fruit, spice, tomato, pepper/clove. Mineral
Mouth: tiny mint on the front of palate. Medium minus tannin and acid. And that's about it.

2009 Tissot (Bénédicte et Stéphane / André et Mireille) Trousseau Singulier France, Jura, Arbois
Colour: Ruby
Nose: Slightly jammy red fruit, slight toast/smoke. Vanilla and cream.
Mouth: Red fruit, tiny vanilla, toast, medium acid, medium minus tannin. Medium long finish.

Flight 4 - Vin Jaune (3 notes)

Nose: Sherry aromas, cream, kernal, spice and apple.
Mouth: Medium acid, green apple, aldehyde.

Colour: Gold>bright
Nose: Kernal, honey, sherry aromas, spice, oxidative.
Mouth: Kernal, dry, medium minus acid, low tannin, spice, apple.

2001 Jacques Puffeney Arbois Vin Jaune France, Jura, Arbois
Colour: Gold
Nose: Cream, cheese, walnut, sherry aromas, slight dried fruit
Mouth: medium plus acid, green apple, spice, medium minus tannin, aldehyde.

Closing

Interesting tasting, nice wines and educational too boot. I've had Arbois wines before and I find them very pleasant. On this occasion I really liked the Dom.Bornard L'Ivresse de Noe and the Stephane Tissot Poulsard Arbois Sans Soufre. I also enjoyed the Pinot Noir and the Vin Juanes.
